A mother and daughter who used an internet dating scam to steal $1.1m (£700,000) have been jailed for a total of 27 years.
Denver-based Karen Vasseur, 63, and daughter Tracy, 42, tricked victims into thinking they were talking to US service personnel looking for love.
The prolific scammers duped 374 victims in the US and 40 other countries. ... Colorado authorities said the pair ran an operation which included several other members who have not been caught. This "staff" would do the leg work of targeting potentially vulnerable people on popular social media sites or dating services.

This being an internet scam, those who fell victim to it hadn’t a clue who they were dealing with or what they looked like.
These represented themselves as members of the U.S. Military who needed money for various meet-up activities, such as travelling to meet their “dates”, or money for satellite phones to keep in touch.
They targeted people on social media or dating sites. Just think, they could pretend to be anybody, tailored to who they were targeting.
Send faked pictures of themselves to reel in the victims then a sob story about needing money to facilitate the personal relationship and all the while claiming to be in the military...

The bigger question is how this caper can net 20+ years in punishment while the violent thugs and ferals get off with probation and other kid glove treatment.
