(CNN) -- A man who police said was 107 years old was killed in a confrontation with SWAT officers Saturday night.

Police were called to a home in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where suspect Monroe Isadore was.

"When they arrived, they were able to determine that an aggravated assault had occurred against two people at the residence," Lt. David E. Price, a Pine Bluff police spokesman, said in a statement.

Careful about what you support, lest you win the FR “CopSucker Award”.

I’ll stick with the mere facts of the situation as reported and you can engage in speculation about which you know nothing. I based my post on the mere facts.

He was alleged to have committed aggravated assault on two people.

I hear what you're saying. BUT - and there's always a but on FR - what kind of a wussy is assaulted by a 107 year old man (just take two quick steps back and you're out of range for five minutes), and what did those two (yes, 2 on 1 and the 1 is 107) do to merit said assault? And secondly, this is a newspaper report. My trust in the veracity of a newspaper report is just a notch beneath nil. The old man is dead and we'll never really know. There are many things we don't know about the case and, at best, we should withhold judgment on the law enforcement folks. But what happened to back off and wait it out, call in some family, negotiate, etc...?

No matter the “facts” in the article (you assume that reporting contains “the facts”) the amount of force used here in relation to the stated facts does not make any sense.

Just wait a day or two and the “facts” will become clearer. Like with Benghazi and Syria? The facts there were/are nothing but lies. And they were reported in the press, you do remember those guys who write poorly the news?

“10-15 yrs ago it was the big thing to prosecute a perp if he shot a police dog just like if he shot a real cop.

So is it justifiable homicide if I kill a cop in an because he shot my dog?”

Yep justifiable just like they find it all the time if the cop had shot you.

They gassed and shot this poor old man!!?? Couldn't they have just waited until he took his afternoon nap?

I guess when every tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Cops shoot dogs and now old men. It won’t be long before all women and children are at risk.

Thinking you posted on the wrong place. Maybe try huff n puff, they’re more along your line of thinking.

There was no reason to rush this old dude. What the hell kind of assault could a 107 do to 2 apparently younger people?

This is just a continuation of “conditioning for socialism” and you don’t seem to need any more.

I would think he would be a fine neighbor. I wouldn’t bother him, and he wouldn’t bother me.

What’s your point? That he “needed killin’?”

Not understanding the whole cops shooting dogs thing recently.

But "police shooting dogs" isn't a "recent thing".
The officer that I replaced (when he retired after 30 years in law enforcement) had shot probably 25+ injured or vicious dogs through the 70's & 80's.
There's also plenty of Animal Control officers that shoot dogs & cats & such.
The anti-cop/police haters just want you to think it's a recent thing.

As a police officer I'm not a fan of the overuse of SWAT, but instead of being armchair quartebacks maybe everyone that bitches & moans should go to their city council meetings and campaign for dissolving their local SWAT units.

“Cant believe the responses on here.”

1. I would prefer that they handled the situation with a little more patience and from what I’ve read I think they could have. (I know that everything I read is not accurate.)

2. People also seem to be forgetting that one of the pro gun arguments is that a gun is an equalizer, it puts a weaker person on a more equal footing with a stronger aggressor. This wasn’t just a 107 year old man. It was a 107 year old man with an equalizer.

Death and taxes; inevitable. He hadn’t paid taxes for some time. There was evidence that chronic alcohol abuse clouded his thinking. A sad end nonetheless but no bloodshed and no testosterone poisoned, 28 year-old Rambo wannabe shooting the old drunk and his dog.

If the SWAT team finds people who can really fight back, they just pull away and wait. If they get tired of waiting, they set the place on fire.

So far was we can tell from the story, the “aggravated assault” on the other two was that he pointed his gun at them.

We do not know why he did this. We have no idea why they were at the house, why he was in the bedroom.

What we do know is that neither of the two were hurt. It’s not like the 107-year-old was going to beat them up. Also, we know that they were not being held, they both left.

You can’t shoot at police and expect to get away with it. On the other hand, the police had the situation under control, they had a camera, they gassed the guy AND flash-banged him, and still they could not subdue him. That was one tough 107-year-old.

Since he was the only one who knew the truth, we will never know now why he had a gun, and what happened for him to pull the gun.

For all we know, he was senile, the two gave him the gun, and told him the japs were coming to get him. This would be an excellent way to get rid of an unwanted old coot and collect the insurance, without being charged with murder.

So the cops should have just said “Ok gramps, calm down, we’ll come back in the morning and we’ll talk.”?

Damn sensible advice.

"Is it pretty much just a universal truth that if the police come to your home, they’re not leaving without a body or someone in cuffs? It seems that’s the case anymore with any story you read like this."

Domestic laws today require an arrest if any physical contact or threatening language was involved - no matter how benign. My policy is - don't call the cops unless you want a paramilitary op force to show up and cuff everyone (or worse) who acts indignant or surprised.

After he already assaulted two people and he’s armed with a gun?

Lets send you in there to talk to him Mr. Braveheart.

Twenty years ago an old fellow in my small CT town told the tax collector he wasn’t paying his property tax and he was armed. He holed up in his house and wouldn’t come out. The town ignored him and made no effort to interfere with the few friends and family members who brought him groceries.

6-7 months later he surrendered, the house was sold, taxes paid and he moved in with relatives. No one hurt.

Today? 9000 Law Enfarcement ossifers, lock down the entire county, search house-to-house, and call in a dozen M-1 Abrams tanks, along without 30-40 armored support vehicles.
