Signs and Wonders: Rethinking the hate crime that launched the gay-rights movement

Not a hate crime? The murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998 became a cause célèbre for homosexual activists who said Shepherd’s murderers targeted him because he was gay. Now comes a new book saying Shepard and his murderers partied together, had sex together, and used drugs together.

The Book of Matt, out next week to coincide (more or less) with the 15th anniversary of the murder, is causing buzz because the writer is himself gay and a credible investigative reporter.

One of the more interesting reviews of the book came from gay journalist Andrew Sullivan: “If you’re going to base a civil rights movement on one particular incident, and the mythology about a particular incident, you’re asking for trouble, because events are more complicated than most politicians or most activists want them to be.”

Man, those guys are sad if they can’t get their story straight (is that a pun?).

Still, yeah. It sounds like a wild sex/drug orgy that went “bad” (if there is, hypothetically, a way that wild sex/drug orgies can go “good.”) Maybe the author is exaggerating a little. But a lot of them go gaga (pun again?) over that kind of fantasy.

Let me cut to the chase with no more folderol. These guys, all in such situations, need their Heavenly Father. Deeply. None of their orgies, none of their “ceremonies,” none of their “worship,” in the milieu they are in can do anything but get them more and more and more of Satan.

The deepest Christian vision towards this should not even be “oh how they are polluting our nice society, and the moment we get a chance, off with their heads” but “Lord is there some way to pull them back towards heaven from the brink of hell.”

I boldly assert that the answer in principle is always yes. The acceptance is up to them. Because accepting love, and foremost the love of God, always requires a willing yes, then an unwilling no is tragically possible. However angry screeds and signs that seem to glorify the one writing them more than the Lord who is both offended and grieved by the conduct, are not, I submit, the maximally helpful approach. One sign I saw that at least pointed out that Jesus saves, had some kind of rant about TV on it as well. TV? What does TV have to do with this man mired in Satan’s thrall to homosexual sin? Nothing that I can see. I’d personally suggest signs worded in accordance with a sincere desire to help a person out of sin, with a WEB SITE ADDRESS on them, to which any interested person can then go in whatever privacy he (or she) wishes.

I was in Denver on the dates of several note-worthy events. I was there for the Matthew Shepard Tragedy,The John Benet Ramsey Murder, the Oaklahoma City Explosion,and, the Columbine Shootings.

I was working on a song with a rock band and some studio musicians one Friday when we decided to call it quits and leave the studio around 8pm.
We were staying in a rented house that friday night with a few girls and more than enough drugs.The house was in LA up in the hills on (I found out later) Benedict Canyon Road.
While we were getting high and drunk and playing with the girls, about a quarter of a mile from us Sharon Tate and her house guests were being massacred by several of Charles Manson's young zombies. The first we knew anything out of the ordinary was wrong was when we noticed a convoy of polive vehicle clogging up the road the next morning and refusing to let anyone leave the area.

Well, was Dirkhising attacking that gay before Jesse himself was done in? Did he try to beat the fudgepacker up before the latter struck back? Was Dirkhising's attack (if it happened) covered up?

You may be thinking of someone else- Dirkhising was a thirteen year old who was raped and murdered by two adult homosexual partners, one of whom was a "family friend".

HOMOSEXUAL, because there's nothing GAY about it.
