White House to help bankrupt Detroit demolish buildings, hire firefighters

(Reuters) - The White House will send a group of top officials to Detroit on Friday to offer millions in assistance for knocking down empty buildings, hiring firefighters and adding buses to the city fleet, as the city struggles after filing for bankruptcy.

The federal aid has been tapped from a variety of existing programs and is part of a patchwork of grants complementing investments by the city, state and private foundations.

"We're going to continue to support the efforts under way in Detroit and ensure the federal government is an active partner in supporting the revitalization of the city," said Gene Sperling, director of the White House National Economic Council, who has led federal discussions with Detroit on how best to help.

Sperling and cabinet officials will discuss the plan at a meeting with Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, the city's emergency manager Kevyn Orr, members of the Michigan congressional delegation and other leaders.

One note here before everyone jumps on the topic. Detroit has 142 sq miles (Buffalo, NY for example has 52, Orlando has 110, Cleveland has 82). The plain truth is that city planners never had a grasp of the size or complex cost situation with a city this size. Tearing down houses and neighborhoods....might not be a bad idea. Course, no one is going to volunteer to shrink the city neighborhoods...that’s the negative of this story.

And I will admit....a $100 million tossed at tearing down houses in Detroit will simply be misused, with barely a hundred houses torn down for that amount of money.

Obamatollah should pretend the abandoned buildings are the Benghazi consulate and burn them down.

I presume the federal monies for these schemes will be paid out of some slush fund controlled by the administration and not controlled by Congress. It must be that Congress at some time, perhaps the porkulous bailout, vested the administration with monies to be paid out at its discretion. Perhaps this comes from another source.

At some point this has simply got to stop. At some point either the Congress itself must retrieve the reins of governance or the Supreme Court must hold that all of these delegations of authority and spending to the executive branch constitute unconstitutional abdication of the article 1 vesting of legislative power in the Congress. At some point Congress must simply stop passing over arching legislation like Obamacare which says in effect, Mrs. Secretary of Health Education and Welfare, go write 26,000 pages of regulations to reform the American healthcare delivery system as you think best. By the way, if you have to decide whether a child lives or dies because she receives or does not receive a vital organ, go ahead.

There has to come a time when the delegation is so broad that it becomes an abdication of the constitutional duty for legislation to repose only in Congress.

Don't be surprised if the cost to do this is $67 million. Not a mil more, not a mil less.

We all watched in wonder these past few years as congress sat back and accepted Obama’s usurpations. All legislative powers are fast swirling into the executive. Throw in a frightened and compliant scotus, and there can be little doubt that Madison's classic depiction of tyranny is at hand.

I don't know what the Black Swan event will be, where Obama and his rats finally outrage the average American to action, but when it comes, what action will citizens take?

Congress will do nothing. Obama runs the senate.

There is little time to save ourselves, and our salvation will not be found in Washington, DC.

No, let us see if this is farmed out to a private firm.

I think it is one of the kids of the Pultee ( spelled correct ) home-building firm wants to get involved in this arena with a very thought out effort and methodology of disassembling the homes. I haven't had an update on their offer.....

With the emergency manager shinning antiseptic sunlight on all of Detwaa's infections, one might hope since he is completely in-charge for about a year left in his 18 month term, that he farms it out to not political hacks and lackeys, but real contract firms. Gov. Snyder is up for re-election next year, and as he moves to the squishy middle, he wants Detroit's progress as a feather in his cap. Look for him to try to engineer a success on this, in his typical Nerdy fashion.

Other Detroit News......

The Mayor wants to go Defined Contribution ( 401k ) and Freeze the General Pension, as well as more info on the mismanagement of the Pension(s).

It maybe too little to late for many nay-Sayers here, but a forensic type investigation into how it was run was done as it needed to be to form a baseline out of the dysfunctionality.

And don’t be surprised if this is just the beginning of a series of Federal taxpayer bailouts of Detroit. They’ll just do it piecemeal until we accept it.

Seems to be some confusion the article mentioned as they mention a 401k and the little known 401a.

The mentioning of the 401a is significant.

In Detroit's neighboring Oakland County, the Republican County Executive, L Brooks Patterson converted the County Workers to a 401a and Medical Savings Accounts in the Mid 90's.

They have a AAA Bond Rating, because of those changes.

One may ask, is Detroit's Emergency Manager Kevin Orr wise to mimic the success of his County Neighbor? perhaps :-)

You beat me to it. Just announce on the radio or TV that Devil’s Night will now run for one month. It could be fun for the whole family and pretty darn instructional too.Every kid born inside of Telegraph and Eight Mile knows how to build a fire cheap.
