Clinton says Obama needs to call the GOP's 'bluff'
CNN ^ | 29//13 | Ashley Killough

Former President Bill Clinton, who sat in the Oval Office during the last government shutdown, supports President Barack Obama's refusal to negotiate with congressional Republicans and argues he should call their "bluff" as the government nears a possible shutdown and default.

"He could stop it, but the price of - the current price of stopping it is higher than the price of letting the Republicans do it and taking their medicine," he said in an interview that aired Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Clinton went on to say that House Republicans, having realized they have little chance of pushing through legislative items their party wants, have dug in and scrapped any plans of negotiating. "Give us what we want or we're going to shut the government down," Clinton said, describing how he sees the GOP strategy.

"I think under those circumstances, the president has to take the position he's taken," he continued. "Which is 'You - not me - you voted to spend this money.' … You can't negotiate over that. And I think he's right not to."

Obama has repeatedly vowed he won't bargain in the upcoming debt ceiling debate. If the debt ceiling isn't raised by October 17, the government won't be able to pay its bills.

Republicans frequently point to Clinton's tenure, when he negotiated with congressional Republicans over raising the debt ceiling in 1996.

But Clinton argued Sunday that was a different period in time, saying the negotiations then were "extremely minor" and the stakes at the time were not as large: "The economy was growing and the deficit was going down."

“Oh Bill don’t you have a intern waiting somewhere?”

From what I have been told, “Billy Jeff” is inop. Seems that when he had his heart bypass surgery they took the needed veins from “a location other than his legs”

Boehner has to let Obamacare fail on its own. It will. But if it succeeds, then the Dems were right and we were wrong. If we’re doing this because we’re actually afraid it will work and the country will be satisfied then the Dems who accuse us of ideology before country would be right. Let it clearly fail and let them defend the failure. Then we can claim it’s they who put ideology before all.

Clinton has strong political instincts.

But Clinton did not factor in Ted Cruz. If he had, his advice should have been to negotiate a deal.

The problem with that GOPe strategy is that regardless of how it doesn’t work or how much it costs, the dems are making sure their base is covered well enough and cheaply enough to like the further nobamacare free-ride and will keep voting D.

There are too many IFs in that ploy that if backfiring will irrevocably turn us socialist.

If the democRats had followed the law and established a budget, this would not be an issue. Or if the Supreme Court had done its job and thrown out Obamacare this would be a non issue.

I read your post and I’m still wondering if it’s satire?

OK. Let’s start with your premise that we will see the rat wing of the uniparty in control in 14 or 16. It’s a false premise: most House members have their districts so carefully gerrymandered that they could get caught in bed with a dead girl, a live boy, and a donkey named Bob and still keep their seats in the general election. Sure, there are some who lose their seats, but most of that is in the primaries. Most seats aren’t even close to being competitive.

The Senate is usually more volatile as the states are larger and not gerrymandered. So it would be possible that the Senate could tilt more on the ‘rat side. But you have to ask the question: would we even notice? With the majority of gop Senators openly taking the other side on mcconnelcare, why should we even care?

As for the shut down, I think that most people at this point don’t much care. The shut down apocalypse drum has been beaten so many times that it just doesn’t have an effect. The LSM is going to have a hissy fit regardless. Unless you are in MD or parts of VA, the shut down is irrelevant to you. The EBT cards will still work, the social security checks will still be cut, and nothing much will happen that you’ll notice.

Bill just wants Obama to fix it so that he (Bill) isn’t the only president to have a government shutdown as part of his legacy.

So Clinton is trying to set up Obama to be slaughtered by Cruz.

He’s already got Reagan for company, but apparently he didn’t have the stature of Lincoln in his own eyes, so he doesn’t count. No hope of renting his bedroom to the highest donor.

Clinton went on to say that House Republicans, having realized they have little chance of pushing through legislative items their party wants...

You almost have to admire a liar this bald-faced, sort of like watching a train wreck. You can see it coming and you can't do anything about it, and it's spectacular.

There is but one "legislative item" in play and it is something the Democrats, not the Republicans, want, and they're stuck pretending that "No 0bamacare, no government" is somebody else's position. The media will let them get away with the claim, of course, but for once I don't get the sense that the people are buying. If the Republicans really do have the courage not to cave under the media shrieking this could get very entertaining indeed.

BRILLIANT! Send that in to the current GOP big wigs. They do listen to this stuff, and maybe already have read this post.
