More veterans removed at Vietnam War Memorial

When I first saw this story, I assumed that it almost had to be a hoax. After the previous incidents with veterans and the added expenditures involved in closing open spaces to keep veterans from paying their respects to the Honored Dead one would assume that even a novice politician would move to staunch the bleeding. But instead, it seems that the White House is doubling down, as reported at The Weekly Standard.

Via William Jacobson, NBC’s affiliate in Washington, D.C. reports that police ordered tourists and Vietnam war veterans who were visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall to leave the memorial at one point on Friday.

After one group of veterans went around the barricade, “the park ranger told them the wall was closed,” NBC’s Mark Seagraves reported. “Later another group of vets showed up and moved the barricades. At that point, the memorial filled with vets and tourists. That’s when police came and moved everyone out.”

As usual, it sounds like our veterans accounted themselves in a professional dignified manner, but were not going to put up with any nonsense.

Segraves described the exchange as pleasant and respectful.

The veterans then moved the barricade and walked down to the wall to pay their respects. But a flood of tourists followed even though the memorial is closed to the general public.

“The consensus among the group of Vietnam veterans was we’re going to go anyway. We’ll go through the barricade,” North Carolina resident Reid Mendenhall said.

U.S. Park Police arrive to the scene, asked everyone to leave and put the barricade back into place.

Conflict over the closure of D.C.’s war memorials has drawn a lot of controversy this week.

Yes… a lot of controversy is putting it mildly. The President can pick all the battles with congressional Republicans that he likes and probably not draw too much political fire from the middle. But if you wanted to conduct a poll of who is least likely to be blamed for anything in this country by the general public, veterans visiting war memorials would have to come in somewhere near the bottom of the list, behind possibly only puppies.

How many more of these stories can the administration sustain before the “no compromise, no negotiations” crowd realizes that they’re going to have to come to the table? Assuming, that is, that the stories actually make it onto the national news.

I keep watching Twitter to see what else happens. Mark Levin is in California right now and won’t be back till Tuesday but if things heat up, he may be back early.

>>I think this across the board slap at all vets with closing the memorials will ultimately backfire.<<

Every veteran that I know has a Mom and Dad, Uncles and Aunts, Grandparents who will all remember Barry barricading the War Memorials when it’s time to vote in the next election.

The other day at the office, one of my co-workers asked me how it was that I served multiple tours in Vietnam as a combat infantryman and I didn’t get PTSD. My rather flippant answer was “I didn’t get PTSD in Vietnam, I gave it.”

However, this PTSD question made me wonder what PTSD is and what the symptoms are, so I did a little research on the subject and found that I did indeed possess symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) concerning a traumatic and very stressful incident that occurred during my last tour in Vietnam. I was a professional soldier when the traumatic incident occurred and had accumulated over six years in Vietnam engaging occasionally in close combat with a vicious and cunningly capable enemy, but the traumatic event was not as a result of close combat with this enemy.

One day when I was totally focused on closing with and destroying the enemy, something caught my eye, I looked around and found a new enemy had unexpectedly appeared behind me; it was the American people. The same Democrat Party who had originally sent me to Vietnam promising that, “We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty,” had now sided with the Communists I was fighting. They were parading in the streets of the United States under a Viet Cong flag, were quoting from Mao’s Red Book, and were spitting on and flinging insults at returning Vietnam Veterans. Then, a Democrat led Congress cut off funding for the Vietnam War, American combat troops were withdrawn and we abandoned a valiant ally to their fate.

I was ordered out of the country in 1972, and when I arrived at Travis Air Force Base, California, purposely in the dark of the night, I was advised to change out of my uniform and put on civilian clothing to avoid being attacked by the American people when I entered San Francisco. I was not at all surprised when a few decades later these same people elected a Marxist-Communist as President of what was once my country.

Yes, the deep, burning hatred I feel for the Democrat Party to this day could be diagnosed as a symptom of PTSD, and I wonder how many other Vietnam Veterans feel the same way.

This may not be the best group to f with. I suspect some of them are still pretty P.O.ED with liberals over what happened between 1965 and 19 oh hell, and today.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothin' don't mean nothin', honey, if it ain't free.
Yeah, feeling good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues,
You know feeling good was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.

A vet who served 40+ years ago has to be 60 or older, kids grown, and health perhaps starting to go. That's a free man. We need more free men who have a personal encounter with today's evil.

Wow. What a fabulous post.

God bless you, and here's one American who, even at the age of 10 in 1967, about the time all that ugly stuff really started going down, understood how heroic Viet Nam vets were, and how cowardly it was to leave a brave ally to its fate. That must have hurt American vets as much as anything.

Please do me the honor of reading my homepage. :^) That was me at the age of 11-12 spitting in the faces of those who would spit in yours.

A lot of Americans are right there with you. Count me as one.

Yes. For several months, I've heard. Unfortunately, he did not remain there.

I met a Vietnamese woman who said that when the U.S. pulled out, they had to run for their lives and get on a boat. She was just a young girl then. She said the communists were shooting at everyone in the boat and she saw blood on the people as she stayed low to the floor. She is thankful for what the Americans did over there and she loves this country. Too bad the Democrats don’t have the same feeling about America. My brother fought in Vietnam and he said he felt sick when the Democrats caused us to pull out. He knew what would happen to those people left behind.
