Some pay price for entering closed Acadia ( Maine )

Rangers issue a handful of citations over the weekend for alleged trespassing. The government shutdown closed the national park Oct. 1.

For months, Julie and Eugene Gillies of South Portland planned to celebrate their wedding anniversary in Bar Harbor.

They weren’t about to let a political fight in Congress get in the way of their plans to see Acadia National Park, which they visited on their honeymoon 34 years ago.

Riding on small motor scooters beneath a bright blue sky Sunday morning, the couple went around the barricades and past the sign declaring the park closed and joined what they estimated to be 1,000 other hikers and bicyclists heading out on the Park Loop Road toward Thunder Hole. Another couple from South Portland rode with them on scooters.

Their idyllic morning came to an abrupt end when they were surrounded by park rangers. The price for violating the park’s closure order: a $100 fine for each member of the party.

“I thought they were going to drive all of us to jail,” said Julie Gillies, a mental health therapist. She said the rangers got angry when she asked them why her group was singled out.

“It was the most embarrassing, intimidating thing ever,” she said. “I thought I was in a foreign country.”

...

Acadia, which typically gets about 285,000 visitors in October, is closed to the public just as the fall foliage season begins, potentially hurting the economy in Bar Harbor and the rest of Mount Desert Island.

More cruise ship visitors visit the park in October than in any other month

What needs to happen is get a flash mob of about 1000+ people every day and pick a national park to invade. Stay there for about 4 hours then leave the park untouched, except steal the Barry-cades

Do you agree with the National Park Service’s decision to ticket people for entering Acadia National Park during the federal shutdown?

Woody Guthrie better come back and update “This Land is Your Land” because, apparently, it ain’t.

The rangers should not be issuing these tickets. The first day I was sympathetic to their confusion...no more. If they’re on the job there’s no reason to punish US citizens because the rangers aren’t on the job. If they aren’t on the job because the government can’t afford to pay them, there’s no one to arrest US citizens enjoying THEIR land and memorials.

Its really frightening to see the extent of government officials complicity in the Obamafuhrer’s cultural extortion scheme. If I were one of these employees, I would be unable to see ANY “trespassers”.

they thought the barrycades and cones would keep us out - that we would just ‘follow orders’. When that didn’t happen, they got out wire, that didn’t work either. Now it is tickets and fines which will deter some, next it will be arrests, which will deter more. We cannot let them deter us. Storm the barrycades every day. Don’t let them win.

Tear up the citations. Refuse to pay. Demand a jury trial. Make this cost the King as much as you can, in terms of both money and embarrassment.

What’s surprising is that while 66% of the votes are against the ticketing, 34% agree with it. It’s obviously an unscientific poll, but hard to believe that so many people think that ticketing is proper.

I’m thinking that flash mob should leave the park untouched, but maybe they could pants a few park rangers and run their undies up the flag pole.

Just imagine how abusive some real Federal Law enforcement is going to be all because we sat back and let them do this.

A few of these Ranger Ricks need to experience a Thomas Jefferson moment.

If they went around the barricades they should have expected to be stopped.

But when the officer shouted angrily at them, we moved from a constitutional republic to a dictatorship.

Will these people remember in the voting booth?

So if you’re not carrying ID, can you just tell them your name is Barry Soetero and send the ticket to the White Hut?

(it is still legal to go about ‘undocumented’, right? )

Duct tape ‘em to the flag pole. Run the flag upside down.
