Reid and McConnell talk deal "taking the lead"

enate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) are taking the lead on talks to raise the debt limit and reopen the government, according to senators.

Reid and McConnell are working off a six-point proposal sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) that would fund the government for six months and raise the debt ceiling until Jan. 31, 2014. Senators view discussions between the two leaders as a promising sign of potential bipartisan compromise.

“Reid and McConnell are talking now and those discussions continue so I see that as progress,” said Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas).

“There are a number of different elements,” he added. “The fact that they’re actually talking for the first time represents significant progress.”

“The real conversation that matters now is the one that's taking place between McConnell and Reid,” said Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.). “We're at place where something important has evolved.”

“Earnest" talks between the two Senate party leaders began in the last 24 hours, as talks between the White House and House Republicans fizzled, he said.

Corker said Senate Republicans were providing McConnell with "a lot of support" in the fledgling talks.....

Didn’t need to read any farther than Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. They better be in it for the long haul now, Cave, and lose big in 2014. They will be blamed for the shut down by low information voters, and the base will stay home angry.

All of this is just playing kick the can unless there are serious proposals to reduce spending.

Reaching the debt limit would result in instant budget balancing.

Uhhhh, what right does the senate have to negotiate a settlement. Reid needs to be negotiating with the house. The senate can do nothing about the budget impass. I’m not sure they can do anything other than approve a measure passed by the house.

The Democrats do not want a deal. It is all or nothing. Senate GOP needs to shut up and quit badmouthing each other. The enemy is not us. Perhaps they might take a spell and figure out how to dump all this where it belongs. On Obama and Harry Reid.

Now they just look like the fools that we know so many of them to be. The senior GOP thought they were so smart and now they get kicked in the arse.

Regardless of what RINO Collins proposes and Reid and McConnell work out, the House Republicans are already saying her proposal has serious flaws which makes it unacceptable according to an interview of a Representative on FOX.

Pretty clear now that the Dems won’t agree to ANY deal before the 17th.

The GOP needs to refocus on a few populist themes and carpet bomb vulnerable Dems with them. Issues like the device tax and individual mandate are sitting set up in the wheel house yet the surrender monkey GOP refuses to use the sledge hammer.

Good! The Republicans need to stop quivering and stop negotiating. The only thing saving us right now is Obama stopping them from throwing away their power!!
