North Andover (MA) High Punishes (sober) Teen For Giving Drunken Pal Ride Home From Party
CBS Boston ^

It’s tough for Eleanor Cox to talk about how heartbroken her daughter Erin is over the punishment she received for doing what she thought was right.

“She’s very fragile and I’m worried about her. Very worried about her. She didn’t do anything wrong,” Cox told WBZ-TV on Sunday.

Two weeks ago, Erin received a call from a friend at a party who was too drunk to drive. Erin drove to Boxford after work to pick up her friend. Moments after she arrived, the cops arrived too and busted several kids for underage possession of alcohol.

A North Andover High School honor student, Erin was cleared by police, who agreed she had not been drinking and was not in possession of alcohol. But Andover High told Erin she was in violation of the district’s zero tolerance policy against alcohol and drug use. In the middle of her senior year, Erin was demoted from captain of the volleyball team and told she would be suspended from playing for five games.

...

Neither the school district nor its attorney could be reached for comment Sunday, but the Cox family is hoping they’ll listen to the host of supporters who’ve stood behind Erin.

“She didn’t do anything wrong. She did what she thought was right, and I’m very proud of her,” Erin’s mother said.

A zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol for its students is not the “nanny state,” it’s setting a proper standard for an institution that someone is going to earn a diploma from. If you either help supply the alcohol or help transport the kids back and forth from the “bender,” you’re enabling their activity, even if you aren’t drinking yourself.

You mean “...for an institution from which someone is going to earn a diploma.”

Sounds like at your high school they had their ducks in a row on the alcohol thing... grammar, not so much!

A preposition is a word you should NEVER end a sentence with. :-)

It is good that young Erin learns early that government, at every level, is capricious, vindictive, and stupid.

Has nothing to do with halos or being perfect. But it’s people like you, who imply that a staple of everyone’s “teen years” is illegal alcohol use, who are part of the problem. We need more people serving as examples of good behavior, not making excuses for bad behavior or suggesting that it’s normal and everyone does it, which isn’t true. Many human tragedies would be prevented if kids and adults for that matter did not use illegal substances of any kind.

Yes. Obviously, it would have been far preferable for the enabled drunk kid to have driven head-on into a family on her way home over those narrow, windy Boxford roads.

I agree on "zero tolerance," incidentally. I think the principal should be fired for this.

“zero tolerance”=zero common sense. It’s a dodge protect administrators from having to make judgment calls and possibly having to defend their decisions.

So the school is essentially saying let your drunk friends drive and kill themselves or someone else or get in trouble for helping them. God job.

But if she was driving a transgender or gay friend to a sexual encounter she would be praised for doing the right thing.

That's absolutely the lesson she should learn!

The only one stupid is her parent who is “proud” of her for helping enable and cover up her friend’s illegal behavior instead of reporting it to the child’s parents. The school’s policy is probably that she should not be in attendance at these illegal parties. She was and she didn’t need to be.

No one’s saying her violation was severe, but her punishment of missing a few sporting events is hardly severe either. She isn’t missing any classes or schoolwork or being asked to put in extra time in detention. It’s appropriate.

Especially those who are where they are because of "Affirmative Action."

“And she should have called the kids’ parents if she cared about his well-being, not drive him home herself.”

So the next time instead of calling a friend, maybe he just drives himself home?

Liberals always punish those who do it right, and reward the scumbags.

The proper noun is "Masshole."
