Schumer: Dems Got Everything They Wanted; Republicans Got ‘A Fig Leaf’

The bipartisan deal to reopen the government and temporarily lift the debt ceiling includes one small Obamacare element—a provision that says people’s incomes must be verified before they can get Obamacare subsidies to help pay their insurance premiums.

But this was not a concession to Republicans, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Wednesday.

“It’s, you know, it is, frankly, a bit of a fig leaf, which we were happy to give, but that was not a negotiation. That was not what Ted Cruz and the others started to demand that we give them.” …

Yes the ratchet effect is in full force. I have been screaming about that here on FR for years, but every time a new issue comes up, it’s like history began this morning.

Can you imagine how good Ted Cruz is going to look after 3 or 6 more months of the Obamacare uber-fail? He’ll be the ONLY guy who can stand up and say “I tried to stop it”.

Texas LOST at the Alamo as well. But that doesn’t mean the Alamo was a senseless fight.

Wait’ll the dumbasses realize they can’t afford Christmas this year due to the Jan 1 premium sky-rocket.

The republican leadership didn’t even fight... they didn’t even negotiate... they rolled over exposing their fat bellies for schmucky to rub.

Of course they did. The GOP is just another wing of the Democratic Party....they just provide the cover to make it look like there was opposition.

Exactly right. Cruz and Lee will come out on top. Open enrollment for most companies is right around the corner. We’ll see how many people get kicked onto the exchanges or how premiums and deductibles have increased or how many elderly got dropped from Medicare Advantage supplemental insurance (my mother-in-law). They can’t even run a web site and they think they can run healthcare for 350 million people. What a joke they are.

If Obozocare fails the media will blame Republicans, over and over until it sticks. And by the time the next election rolls around they reduced Cruz’ reputation to that of Jerry Sandusky.

That is another thing we won: GOP is firmly entrenched on the side of trying to save people from Obamacare.

Meanwhile, Democrats in the senate are on record with votes for the following:
- shut down government rather than give people one year of tax relief for not buying insurance.
- shut down government rather than repeal an unpopular medical device tax
- keep the parks shut down rather than accepting a clean bill to open them.
- keep kids from getting medical treatment in order to exert political pressure for a “victory”.
- keep other parts of government closed rather than passing clean CRs for them, in order to “beat” the republicans, which Shumer now admits was the goal.
- Rejecting a long-term compromise because as they said they want to spend more money.

The only thing that would have been better would have been if, after the last embarrassing senate vote, the house would have had a major press conference, and said the following:

“Republicans know that the ACA is already causing major problems for our economy and for individuals, and the small good it achieves for some uninsured is far outweighed by the major harm it is doing and will do to the hundreds of millions of people who already had insurance. The administration has admitted they are not nearly ready to implement the law, as they illegally amend it by executive order time and again.

“So we fought for a simple one-year delay of the entire law, to give the government time to work out the problems, and the people time to express their opinions in the next election. Clearly, the other party has no interest in hearing from the people, as they soundly reject any slowdown or relief for their own constituents from this disastrous law.

“We have also tried to fund many parts of government that have nothing to do with health care, as we have tried to get the opposition party to listen to the American people and relieve them of the burden of paying punitive taxes for not buying insurance that is not ready for prime time. But the opposition party has rejected clean spending bills even for things they pretend to support, like children’s health care.

“It is clear now that the opposition’s love of their failing health insurance scheme is so great that there is no amount of harm they are unwilling to accept to the people they claim to serve in order to block even common-sense, widely supported changes to the law such as the repeal of a medical device tax.

“While we on the Republican side feel the pain of our constituents, and wish we could act by legislative fiat like the President so often pretends he has the power to do, we are limited in what we can accomplish, and to do what is right requires that the opposition in the senate think more about the people THEY represent than the special interests they support.

“If there was any chance that continuing the fight would convince the opposition to do what is right, it is clear they want only to “win” a political fight at all costs. And we are not willing to let the democrats do any more harm to the American people than they already have.

“So today, we are passing a 3-month extension of both the current spending levels and the debt ceiling. This will put our government back to work, and give the people three more months to express to the opposition party their outrage over the destruction of their health insurance plans and the economy.

“It is our firm hope that, with the passage of time, our colleagues in the other party will come to realize that the good of the country is more important than defending a flawed and failing health insurance scheme. We apologize to those of you already suffering the consequences of the ACA — we are sorry we do not have the votes, and do not have the ability, to fix this ourselves. We urge you to take action to let your representatives know what you want, to urge them to represent YOU rather than their party bosses, and if that does not work, to help us elect people in 2014 who will look out for your interests.

“Thank you, good night, and may God bless our country.”

what do you mean the republipukes got nothing?
Just like how Obamacare passing it only took a little bribe, like the earmark attached that has $2 billion going to McConnel and Boner for that dam their building between Kentucky and Ohio,
Please don’t tell me they didn’t make out good.
The 2 Judases selling us out for $2billion.

The national government has become like California; i.e. under total leftist-alien control.

I'm leaving the Republican party as I have been threatening for several years. I usually do not vote for people any more only the ballot proposals so as an Independent I can still vote on them.

Republicans! What a "bunch" of gutless wonders. People who have sunk to the nonentity status of "Jesse Jackson," "Al Sharpton," "The Divine One" in short those who do not belong but who are in control. How vile, low and loathsome like looking into a cesspool.

Guess what Chuckie..... YOU OWN IT ALL - LOCK,STOCK, AND BARREL.

He doesn't care. Look at what a mess welfare, Medicaid and Medicare have gotten us into. The Dems are shameless and have no problem looking at a disaster and calling it a triumph. And the lapdog media will agree wholeheartedly.

I guess you’re right. I don’t think we win anything anymore until we take the corrup media on. That means a concerted, country-wide TV shutdown.

It may be seen as a fig leaf but it is more than a fig leaf. I can’t believe they were going to roll this thing forward without verification of eligibility for the subsidies. That makes it infinitely damaging, rather than enormously damaging, and there’s a difference. I guess they figured they could always allow fraud, just as in the disability program. But we made it illegal.

Onward to repeal of the entire dungpile at some future date.

What exactly is your criticism of Boehner on the shutdown, debt fight? I don’t like the outcome any more then you do, but I thought Boehner did his best with a weak hand to play. Now McConnell well that is an entirely different matter, he sucked.
