A Wisconsin man was arrested last Saturday after he punched two men he believed were speaking Spanish even though it turns out the pair were conversing in Hebrew, not Spanish.
Dylan T. Grall, 23, was walking down Henry Street in Madison, WI just after 2:00 AM when he passed by two men he believed were speaking Spanish. According to the police incident report, Grall proceeded to swear at the pair and demanded they speak English. He then punched each of the two men in the face, leaving one with a swollen eye, while the other victim fell to the ground with the impact of the assault.

He thought they were speaking Spanish? That’s bad enough on it’s merits, but Spanish sounds nothing like Hebrew.
Now I must say this does seem entirely reasonable ..
The two victims of this moron might be lucky he thought they were Hispanic, rather than Jewish. If he had recognized Hebrew, he would have done much more than a sucker punch to the face, I’m betting.
Just a comment. In the Southwest, up until 1975 or so, Spanish was unheard. If people were speaking it in public, most people would stop and stare.
It was considered rude, and un-American. After all, we fought a war against that nation.
They lost.
Having been born on land bought by our nation - the Gadsden Purchase - I can safely say that there is no dispute in the American mind over whose country it is, and what language is the language of the nation.
There's only one group of people disputing that, and doing so by making their choice a fact....and typically as the result of a crime, that of entering the United States illegally.
What happened in Wisconsin is predictable, and the result of malfeasance. It's not going to end quietly.
There is no civil right to invade, occupy and colonize the United States. Period.
I knew a guy in the Air Force that admitted to driving past an Hassidic Jew that was hithhiking and yelling “Quaker!” at him. He said as soon as they got past him, he raised the middle finger on his hitchhiking hand. Too funny.
While I have no idea whether or not it was considered rude or "un-American" to speak Spanish in the American Southwest in 1975, I do know that it was common enough to speak Spanish - and Hebrew - in the streets of New York in 1975.
Those Spanish speakers were not Mexican, but Puerto Rican.
As such, they were born American citizens on American territory - and they fought disproportionately to their numbers in WWII, Korea and in Vietnam.
Here's my question, blowfish: Should people speak English in the streets? After all, it's the language of a country whom we fought two wars against.
That sounds pretty un-American to me.
Madison man arrested for punching man in face for “speaking Spanish”...This is very odd for Madison. Now, if it said, “Madison teacher punches legislator in face for praying...” I’d just shrug.
FReep mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Is Wisconsin Man related to Floriduh Man?
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!
It wasn't. That's complete BS.
:-)
Very wisely put. I, too, shudder at the invasion of violent, hostile Israelis... /S
LOL
Yer funny
Interesting legal problem. If you attack someone who you think is a protected minority, and it isn’t, is it still a ‘hate crime’?
I have been know to call out: "Mas cerveza, por favor!" Want to take a swing at me tough guy?
Really dumb and shocking comment. Madison is a university town with an enormous student population, some of them foreign students who have come for the argricultural programs. Some of them Americans studying French, German, Spanish, Japanese literature. The United States has foreign tourism and visitors from all over. Should they be beaten up in the street for talking to each other in their own language(s)? Would you like it if American travelers in Rome or Geneva or Prague were beaten up in the street for speaking to each other in English?
That cretin looks like he couldn’t tell a tailpipe from his own rear end with a guide dog and a map, on his best day. Too too bad the guys speaking Hebrew weren’t versed in Krav Maga. Then perhaps they could have educated him in the error of his ways. What an anal orifice!
