Authorities struggled to explain how a small plane crashed at an international airport, erupted in fire, but evidently went unnoticed for hours.

The incident occurred early Tuesday in Nashville.

But exactly what time remains a mystery.

Actually it’s Reagan’s fault. He dismantled the air traffic controller’s union and fired all who went on strike.

Actually Reagan Airport is open 24 hours. There is a nighttime curfew only for noisy jets. Quieter ones (any aircraft with an engine manufactured after 2000 is quiet enough).

Thanks for the correction and clarification. The UPS hub is in Lexington, Kentucky. Nashville is neither.

“When I land in charleston, I’m just glad the plane doesn’t fall off the runway and down the mountain...”

LOL, I have been there, small plane and commercial jet. I would rather be in and out of there in a small plane. One night on a flight from Atlanta to Cleveland the pilot set the plane down on the third attempt. It was a really nasty night, with lousy visibility. And after leaving Charleston and on our way to Cleveland, one of the stewardess’s (Yes, in those days we were not yet calling them cabin whatever) got sick from the turbulance.

“Cruz’s fault, no wait Cruz and Bush’s fault. Yeah that’s better.”

Wrong! Gotta be Reagan’s fault...he is the one who screwed with the air traffic controllers! Doesn’t matter that it was 30 years ago!

What's international about Nashville.

They serve international cuisine: Mexican food, Chinese food, Colombian coffee, and the McDonald's serves French fries.

News Channel 5 reported that the camera caught the blur and fireball at 1:30 a.m.

On the 10:00 p.m. report, they mentioned that planes landing at smaller airports don't necessarily have to contact traffic controllers and this pilot might have thought he was landing at one of the airports close by. That with the fog so thick, he might not have known he was landing in Nashville -- might have thought he was over Smyrna or Murfreesboro.

Very sad over all.

If the pilot somehow survived the crash but was severely injured, he may have lived if he had experienced immediate rescue and medical treatment.

But "hours" trapped in the plane? Hardly a chance.

Was NO ONE on duty that night patrolling periodically with a security car or a security golf cart????

This is an AIRFIELD, for cryin' out loud.

You’re welcome.

Can’t help but wonder why he didn’t try to reach the controllers for assistance in fog so thick. I watched the 4 a.m. newscast before going to bed and they showed the views from several live cams around the area. There was no view to see on any of them. Just fog. But that’s why no one was able to see the wreckage for so long.

It was just a bad night to be flying and a sad ending for this pilot. I feel for his family and hope they’ll get some answers soon.

Could be. Poor visibility and Smyrna airport’s runways are similar in orientation to BNA. Wouldn’t be hard to confuse the two at that time of day (night), especially if the pilot wasn’t familiar with the local flying area.

Nashville has a 24 hour tower -

http://www.airnav.com/airport/KBNA

So either the Cessna’s ELT did not go off, or the tower was not monitoring the 121.5 frequency.

The NTSB report will be interesting.

Just heard a report on the early morning news and they said the guy’s plane was registered to a flying club in Ontario, Canada, though his name hasn’t been released yet. They said he’d been flying since 1989 but didn’t say if he’d been to this area often or not.

He may have been to TN enough to feel comfortable about where he was but the fog was thick enough to make him miss his mark. He may well have thought he was landing at Smyrna and that’s why he didn’t radio in first.

international simply means customs agents are available at the airport.

No doubt our swarthy middle eastern enemies look at a story like this and realize they can drop in on an airfield unnoticed in the middle of the night...

yes enemies are always looking for breach of security.

Say a prayer for the pilots family.

Pilots should always remember the saying” There are old pilots, ther are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots”.
