Paul Dukas wrote a symphony and quite a bit of chamber music, but he is remembered today for only one piece, which achieved immortality when Walt Disney animated it in his 1940 film, “Fantasia”. Leopold Stokowski cut a bit from the original score to match Disney’s images of Mickey Mouse, the wizard and his runaway brooms.

Dukas: “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice" (Sawallisch conducting the NHK Symphony of Japan)

Dukas: “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (Stokowski conducting from “Fantasia”)

He was indeed.

I had the privilege of attending the Saturday Morning Children’s Concerts at Boston Symphony Hall, and he was often the Lecturer/Conductor.

Symphony Hall had dozens of life-sized Greek statues around the Perimeter, so I learned anatomy as well as music!

Good evening, Connie, and thanks for the tributes for the troops. *HUGS*

Did your day go well? Expecting any issues for Halloween?

Over the weekend we had hoodlums set fire to the playground equipment in the school we back up to....string them up!!

I covered some of Camille Saint-Saens’ music several months ago. This is one of his best bon-bons, a Halloween classic. Catch that fugue in the middle and how at 5:43 he plays the two themes on top of each other.

Saint-Saens: La danse macabre (Zygel conducting the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France)

Boston Symphony Hall

I took my six year old nephew to a concert there once, and afterward, he proudly announced: "I counted 15 Boobies!"

.I pondered the odd number, and remembered that the statue of Artemis the huntress had an off-the-shoulder tunic which covered one of them. TRUE STORY!!!!!!

This piece for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach would not be considered a Halloween piece except for its treatment by Disney and Stokowski in “Fantasia”. But it’s a great haunted house theme. This is the original arrangement for organ.

Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Anton Winter on organ)
