Alec Baldwin’s MSNBC Show Falls To New Low, CNN’s ‘Unguarded’ Takes A Hit
Deadline.com ^ | 11/11/13 | D Patten

You would not be saying TGIF in cable newsland if you were Alec Baldwin or Rachel Nichols last week. The actor’s 10 PM MSNBC show Up Late and the former ESPN reporter’s Unguarded on CNN both hit demo lows on November 8. With guests Cristina Tzintzun of the Workers Defense Fund and the Coalition for the Homeless’ Mary Brosnahan talking immigration reform and anti-poverty programs, Up Late With Alec Baldwin pulled in just 101,000 viewers among adults 25-54 on Friday.

That’s a 41% drop from the 172,000 demo results of the one-hour show’s October 11 debut. While Baldwin’s total viewers were up to 395,000 from the 354,000 low of its November 1 show, the demo was down from that show’s 130,000.

Yet, this utter failure will continue...

We need to be able to choose our cable channels a la CARTE...pick and choose what channels you like, and disregard the others.

This way, the failures will not be "subsidized" by viewers who do not watch the crap. :) Baldwin's show, as judged by viewership, is garbage.

There are a lot of bored drunks watching tv on Friday night.

I wonder if they see him and think they’re watching 30 Rock. Takes a few minutes to see if the topic they’re discussing is actually jokes or real.

Al a carte cable is an idea the Republicans should champion and talk about. I am serious. I think it could help to start solving a myriad of problems if people chose what channels they wanted in their home.

It would be fun watching Baldwin crawl into the fetal position week after week.

True.

But it'd be over too fast, like Cassius Clay vs. Sonny Liston.

You'd have to match Baldwin up against a really dumb conservative to make it fair, and I don't think there are any that dumb.

Oh please, like they already aren’t involved with tv regulations. All I am talking about is freedom to choose. The conservatives should champion it because it would benefit us in the long run. No one is talking about telling people what channels they can watch, just the freedom to choose those channels.

I found it rather telling that TCM was trying to “groom” the audience into accepting Mr. Baldwin as Robert Osburn’s replacement.

MANY letters told TCM in no uncertain terms that he was NOT an acceptable substitute, let alone replacement.

Alec, buddy, perhaps you might just want to fade into the woodwork at this point...

It would be Congress telling the cable companies to let US CHOOSE what we allow into our homes, rather than the cable companies telling US what we have to pay for in addition to what we want to pay for.

It has NOTHING to do with Congress telling the PUBLIC what to buy, it’s telling the cable companies that they have to RESPECT the public’s choices.

BIG difference, no?

BIG difference, no?

No. You have it exactly backwards.

The cable companies sell you a product which is a mix of channels with a price attached. You are free to buy it or not. You are free to choose from several different suppliers: cable, satellite, FIOS, antenna [gasp!].

But you think that Congress should stick its snout in and tell these private companies how they should configure their offerings. Sounds a lot like the mess we've got with insurance.

You evidently consider yourself conservative else you wouldn't likely be here. How do you reconcile your conservatism with your advocacy of more government interference in private business?

Sounds just like the justifications for Obamacare -- it will benefit us in the long run. How about we pick and choose from what private businesses offer us and leave the government out of it.

I am sure u liked it when Congress passed a law that made cell phone companies let you keep your phone number when u changed plans? Sure u did, it is about having freedom of choice. Al la carte cable is no different. To compare it to Obamacare is just silly.

Of course, I liked it.

Doesn't mean I think government should have gotten involved. You're going to have to learn to separate what you like from the proper role of government.

Just because it's nice doesn't make it right.
