Obamacare Architect: 'Could Be the Beginning of a Death Spiral'
Weekly Standard ^ | 11/15/13 | DANIEL HALPER

Posted on 11/15/2013 7:10:40 AM PST by Evil Slayer

Harvard professor David Cutler, a so-called architect of Obamacare, says we "could be" witnessing "the beginning of a death spiral" for the unpopular health care bill. Cutler made the comments last night on Fox News:

"So when you were on last week I asked you, if they don't get enough people in the exchanges, then what happens?" said host Megyn Kelly. "And you said then the premiums go up very, very high. Now, was that ball put in motion today?"

"We don't know yet," said Cutler. "So what the president is trying to do is to say the website is not working, the exchanges are not working. Let's try and slow the process down and delay it by a year. And if it turns out to be a delay of a year, then we can work through that. It would be uncomfortable as it has been for the past month, but it will turn out okay. If it becomes a permanent situation that people who are healthier stay away and people who are sicker go into the exchanges, that becomes a very big problem."

"Is that the beginning of the so-called death spiral?"

"That could be the beginning of a death spiral," said Cutler. "That is, you could have a situation where the only people in the exchanges are very unhealthy people with very high premiums."

We had to have this law because 30 million people didn’t have health insurance. 0care is designed so that we will only have 30 million insured, payed by taxpayers.

The administrations ace in the hole is the requirement to go in to the exchanges. Are the subsidy $$ fixed or can the govt. increase at will?

“Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz previewed a new plan to repeal Obamacare and replace it with different health care reforms.

“The only way to stop the problems is to admit this idea was fundamentally flawed to begin with,” Cruz told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly. “At this point, starting over, stopping Obamacare, is the essence of pragmatism.”

Cruz’s approach differs from some congressional Republicans and Democrats who are working to pass a bill delaying the Obamacare individual mandate or help Americans keep their current health care plans.

Cruz said that he would release a bill to empower Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines, creating a “true national market.” Insurance can only be purchased intra-state at present.

“In the coming weeks, I intend to layout a plan to provide exactly that, a plan to repeal Obamacare altogether and at the same time expand options for five million-plus people, who have lost their health insurance and 300 million people across this country to expand their options to have affordable, personal, portable health care,” Cruz said...........”

The beginning of the death spiral was the day it became unpopular

It was unpopular on the day Reid and Pelosi used every parliamentary trick in the book to pass it. Those who forced this abomination upon the people will pay for it at the voting booth.

- Cutler said that Obamacare can take money from the “subsidies funds” and give it to the insurance companies to get them to go along beyond their contracted agreement

- Cutlet looked like a cornered rat when he was interviewed by Megyn Kelly on FNC

“And since kids can now stay on their parents’ plans until they’re 26, we have substantially reduced the pool of those much-needed ‘healthy payers’.”

EXCELLENT POINT! Were they really that stupid to make that provision? Or was that another way to get the young low information voters on board?

It seems to me that based on the presidents statements yesterday and the egg heads statements here, what is evolving before our eyes is medicaid on steroids. That is much of Obamacare will be trashed leaving only care for the very sick and the welfare riff raff that will replace going to the ER and paid for by all the rest, including the rich.

Agree with your assessment, bert. After a passage of time, taxes will not be sufficient and confiscation of our properties will have to kick in.

The political outcome will be expanded Medicade with higher income thresholds plus catastrophic care. Those under 400% of poverty level (e.g. $60,000 for a couple) plus the very sick will get either free or heavily subsidized health care. Everyone else will continue as before 2014. This will add three hundred billion to the annual federal deficit.

That 400% of poverty level is the population median. It splits the country in half. That’s music to a Democrat’s ears: 50% takers and 50% makers.

Well, don't complain when common English is reduced to unintelligible grunts and third world gibberish.

Say that I'm a young person in my twenties:

I've just graduated from college, and I have a huge student loan debt that needs to be repaid, but I face a very uncertain job market, made worse by 0bamacare incentives that make prospective employers favor part-time over full-time workers.

0bamacare now forces me to pay grossly inflated prices for health insurance so that I, a person with huge debts and a part-time job, can subsidize the health costs of welfare-dependants and the castastropically ill.

Yep, it sounds like this only needs some time, and it will all work out just fine.

The quickest way out of this morass is for a state(s) to secede from this abysmal union.
