The Pentagon is floating a controversial plan to close all U.S.-based commissaries in 2015 as part of a massive cost-saving effort after more than a decade of war.
The commissaries are grocery stores that offer food and other necessities at a discount to members of the military, their families and veterans. But as Congress tightens the purse strings, the stores could get caught in the budget battle.
Budget cutters say they don't yet know how much money the plan would save, but there are 178 commissaries in the United States -- and 70 overseas -- which receive a total of $1.4 billion in government funds.
The Defense Commissary Agency, responsible for administering all commissaries worldwide, says military families and retirees save an average of more than 30 percent on their grocery bills compared with those who shop at regular retail stores. The agency says those savings amount to thousands of dollars annually per family.
But families could also lose jobs if the stores close. Thirty percent of the employees at the commissaries are military spouses. The director of the Defense Commissary Agency says that they have already cut their budget by $700 million since 1993.

A few extra drones for Obama and no groceries for YOU!
More 0bamanomics...more pain to our military :(
I’d rather redirect some of the funding going to our Afghani “allies” to pay for the commissaries.
Here’s an idea: lets get rid of obammycare and save some real money—and while we’re at it, let’s cut the number of vacations they can take at our expense in one year—and oh! there will be no more private flights for their dog to join the family for a vacation in HI.
(I’ve always thought that the dog was for show, anyway. As I understand it, Islamists think dogs are dirty)
If they close the class 6 stores, the Earth will burn.
They have to pay for those homosexual dependents some way.
“military families and retirees save an average of more than 30 percent on their grocery bills compared with those who shop at regular retail stores.”
How about we compare that percentage to the folks taking food stamps who haven’t put their lives on the line for the rest of us?
they’re floating the idea eh? can we guess WHAT they’re FLOATING IT IN!??
If they really want a massive cost cutting program, they could use some of the tools of their trade to remove the biggest spender they can find in Washington... or on the golf course.
Ha!
But Obama cares for military veterans he says so in his hire veterans ads/s
It couldn’t save that much to close them. I would think just keeping costs to whatever the local supermarket sells their product at would be enough.
I don’t believe that it’s being done to save money.
They need the money to redistribute to Obama's Free S**t Army
A transcendent truth.
Good point
Sure, close these.
After they get rid of 80% of all Federal Spending
After they get rid of the ObamaPhones
After they get rid of the Department of Education
After they get rid of DEA Spying on Americans without a warrant
After they get rid of the Department of Energy
After they get rid of 80% of the EPA
After they get rid of ObamaCare
After they get rid of BATFE
After they open drilling on public land to the same amount as when Bush was in office.
After they institute a flat tax of 10% or less (no progressive rates)
After they fully evict the illegal aliens in the country or at least get it down to less than 50k.
After they get rid of Medicaid and Medicare (privatize it)
After they get rid of Social Security Ponzi scheme and make it private.
Then you can do this.
I’m all for priorities, just start on my list first. Then you can cut that.
Recall ALL the Obamaphones before you touch one commissary! Democrats who do this are dirty, rotten, treacherous, evil sloths!
I so endorse your post.
Why not just privatize the commissaries and outsource it to one of the retail chains? Not only could they do a better job for less money, it’d probably provide an income for the DOD.
