Blacks have lowest college graduation rate in state

Black Californians have the lowest rate of college graduation among all ethnic groups and are less educated than their parents, according to a new study by a group calling on state lawmakers to get serious about helping African Americans.

"The State of Blacks in Higher Education in California," released Thursday by the Campaign for College Opportunity, offers a dismal set of findings:

-- 32 percent of black Californians who attended college dropped out, more than any other group, according to 2011 U.S. census data.

-- 30 percent of black Californians aged 25 to 34 have an associate's or bachelor's degree. By contrast, 35 percent of those aged 35 to 44 have a degree, as do 33 percent of those aged 45 to age 54.

-- Although 6 percent of all college-age Californians are black, black students are overrepresented at expensive, for-profit colleges: 10 percent; and at community colleges: 7 percent. They are underrepresented at the University of California: 4 percent; and California State University: 5 percent.

-- Nearly 24 percent of black Californians have degrees compared with 41 percent of white Californians, although the rate for black adults is better than their 18 percent rate in 2000

So is affirmative action doing anyone a favor? Under qualified students are let into colleges and universities where they fail and qualified applicants are denied access.

Once any college kid - of any color - realizes they can make more sitting on the couch these days (reportedly $50K in benfits etc), why spend $150K+ for education? Finance 101.

Yes, but they have affirmative action to get them a job and lifetime government benefits.

They are being given fake grades in high school just for showing up and then think they are ready for college. Once they get to college they realize they are not even close to prepared and drop out.

This has everything to do with federal funding up public schools being tied to attendance and graduation rates.

Tie federal funding for public schools too... SAT scores, and you would see a fundamental shift in the quality of public school education. Of course then the schools would start kicking out the idiots and criminals in droves, but that is the technique that made US schools #1 in the 1950’s

Why is this important to the government? What does it matter what the percentage rate of college graduates are among different ethnic groups? If this is important to the government, then they should be equally concerned about the ethnic make up of athletic teams at state supported universities. Does the university’s team look like the student body, or the population of the state?

Most of the blacks have attended inner city schools which are notoriously known to be inferior to schools in the suburbs. By design.

The inner city schools have been the experimentation centers for what used to be called Outcome Based Education, which was actually the breeding ground for Common Core.

Inner city parents are easier to fool than suburbanites parents.

What a wonderful gift the left have given to blacks. Eh?

What the hell residents of California need to go to college for? Hell, you live a better life if you don’t speak English and are an illegal immigrant. If you want to really be miserable in CA, try working your a$$ off to make $100K a year. Otherwise, live on the dole. The alternative is to be “wealthy”.

(This is for the folks in big cities, not rural CA)

It can be a little different than hopelessness.

Take a few generations of being on the government dole, sprinkle in resentment for the slave era, stir in race-baiters like Sharpton, and you’ve got a mix that tells young black people that they are SUCKERS for trying.

Not only that, if they go to a college that isn’t all black, or work for a white guy, they are Uncle Tom’s.

It becomes a lifestyle - in their mind, it isn’t laziness that keeps them from trying...they are ‘getting back’ at people for the slave era. Their ancestors worked as slaves, so now they get to take a time out, and let white people work for them. This is why there is no shame in not only taking welfare benefits, but also stealing them through fraud.

I'm surprised liberal California college faculty members are not giving minorities the “gentleman's” C and passing the problem on to the employers.

California has among the highest per-pupil education spending in the nation. And yet the problem is always “not enough money”.

They just need to start the remedial classes sooner, say in pre school.

This analogy applies to all not just one racial group: you can put a bowling ball in front of the stereo but when the stereo is turned off, the bowling ball does not make music.

IMO, we have an over blown reliance on “college” attendance. Some people are not cut out for critical thinking. Sorry if that hurts their parents egos but that is how I see it.

“a group calling on state lawmakers to get serious about helping African Americans”

This group is stuck on stupid.

There is no government program, and no amount of taxpayer money, that can fix this problem.

The only thing that could at least partially alleviate it is to have intact nuclear black families who make their children study to achieve academically. But if the parents don’t care (or are not even present), everyone but this “group” can figure out state lawmakers can’t do anything about it.
