Raining on the Nelson Mandela Parade
PJ Media ^ | July 12, 2013 | Kathy Shaidle

Nelson Mandela at the Communist Party’s first public meeting in post-apartheid South Africa, 1990.

You're not supposed to speak ill of the dead, so I figured I'd get a head start.

One of the landmark events of my Gen X youth was the 11-hour, internationally televised “Free Nelson Mandela” concert in 1988.

Because, come on: how could you not be anti-apartheid?

It was a no-brainer, risk-free cause, the type you could support without having to think about it too much or inviting unpopularity or controversy, right?

Actually, no.

Lots of big-name musicians who now boast of being on that concert roster were hesitant to sign on the dotted line unless other bands came on board first.

In fact, most of the backstage machinations and politicking are unedifying tales of cowardice and egomania.

During that concert and the massive publicity surrounding it, Nelson Mandela was presented to millions of young people around the world as a wrongly imprisoned, peace-loving freedom fighter, detained for decades by the evil, crazy, stupid white South Africans, who kept the rest of the country’s majority black population enslaved to various degrees, too.

(Speaking of enslavement, did you know that the term “concentration camp” originated, not in Nazi Germany, but in South Africa, to describe the disease-ridden camps in which South Africans were held by the British during the Second Boer War [1899-1902]?)

Idealistic kids eagerly embraced Mandela as the Gandhi they never had, a Martin Luther King of their very own.

Of course, the real Nelson Mandela was, like those two men, flawed. Arguably more so....

There’s a huge elephant in the room and no one in media is saying a word. South Africa is a crap hole and only getting worse. You decide why. Here’s some examples:

The starkest measure of South Africa’s failure is the yawning gap between rich and poor. Under apartheid, such inequality was by design. Since apartheid came to an end, a tiny black elite has accrued great fortunes. But that has only widened the wealth gap. South Africa’s Gini coefficient—the best-known measure of inequality, in which 0 is the most equal and 1 the least—was 0.63 in 2009. In 1993 it was 0.59. After 18 years of full democracy, South Africa is one of the most unequal countries in the world.

Black corruption is rampant. In September 2012 Moody’s, a credit agency, cut South Africa’s sovereign rating, citing the declining quality of the government, growing social stresses and worsening conditions for investment.

Schools suffer from poor equipment. Only 20% have libraries, and only 7.5% actually have any books. Almost half of all schools rely on pit latrines instead of proper toilets. In July 2012 textbooks that pupils should have received in January were found tossed into rivers in an effort to hide the failure to deliver them.

Here’s a detailed article about how bad it is:

You could not mention Menachem Begin without associating him with the Irgun bombing of the King David Hotel in the late 40’s.

I do see Joe Slovo in that picture. Another commie. From the Soviet Union, no less.

I suspect that it would have been better to have Mangosuthu Buthelezi leading rather than Mandela. I have worked with some engineers from South Africa who had viewed Buthelzi favorably, and were quite surpised that I had heard of him

I already blogged on this earlier today. My comment is that we have been deceived into seig-heiling Communist genocidal maniacs as saviors and ‘freedom fighters’ - our own occupant of the White House notwithstanding.

So glad to read this. I’m tired of all the Mandela worshiping all over the media. Even Fox News is paying homage to this thug.

I had wondered why the MSM was gushing over him when larm bells were going off in my head about his background. Doing some checks online I see he was a dictator, a member of the African Communist Party who signed off on the deaths of many people and built up his military to protect himself. Remind you of anyone?

Don’t forget the necklace murders and disemboweling of WHite women after raping them.

Mandela was a communist terrorist.

Sounds familiar to me.

What? No?!

This man was a saint who improved South Africa, bringing back and whites together and becoming the economic powerhouse it had always believed was its density.
