Could an "Arab Spring" type of upheaval be brewing in the United States? Is the frustration and anger toward our dysfunctional politics and economics beginning to reach a tipping point where young folks begin to push for profound change? Has our democracy become so broken that citizens are going to find creative avenues to express their feelings? Will we pass through the holidays and winter of our dysfunction to arrive at a spring of change? I sense a movement of social unrest growing strongly and quietly towards our own version of the Arab Spring.
Let's take a look at some of the factors that might be pointing in this direction. This past week the GDP showed very positive growth (up 3.6 percent in the third quarter), corporations are booking huge profits, the stock market is at an all time high, and we have more multimillionaires and billionaires than ever before. So why does 70 percent of the country believe the United States is off on the wrong track? Why is trust of our economic, governmental and political institutions at a historic low? Why is the poverty rate back to a historical high?
For more than a generation, the middle class of this country has not seen any significant improvement in their financial situation. In fact, when you factor in inflation, the majority of the country has actually seen a decline in their economic status over the past 25 years...

Tea Party needs to reach out to young people who have college debt and are now supposed to pay for Obamacare.
The IRS interfered with the Tea Party, such as refusing to grant them non-profit status so they couldn’t organize effectively and handing off donor lists for conservative causes to liberals to harass.
There were suspicions of this two years ago, but now we know for a fact.
And the anger of those who tried to organize is greater, while the reasons to be multiply.
Pretty amazing isn’t it? All that and no notice of it, no response from just about anyone. The only real coverage was in the blogosphere.
One of those things that makes you go, “huh?”
This was the most glaring evidence that we are not in control of an out of control government I have ever seen. Just IGNORED is all we got. IGNORED by everyone. The agenda is in place and will not be diverted by peaceful means.
I don’t know. Lots of people are seemingly content with being degraded into a state of permanent dependency. No chains, no whips, no barbed wire. Just 50 million people munching sugary carbs and living vicariously through celebrity gossip.
It’s time for him to take his meds.
Teach your children well. I mean that in the best way possible. Teach them why this is done before their heads are filled with the communist manifesto.
Liberty is the highest human state and also the one that demands the most self-discipline.
The Occupy Wall street tantrum was supposed to be the American spring as well.
Change “spring” into “CW-II” and I agree.
Matthew Dowd? Did Maureen have a sex-change operation?
One does not need to have such an operation to refer to themselves in a different fashion, see Chelsea Elizabeth Manning the former PV1 Bradley Edward Manning.
Marx must be giggling in Hell - the middle class is not the wellspring of revolution, indeed, it is the biggest bulwark against it, which was why Marxists need it to be marginalized before it was wiped out. 0bama and his merry band have made considerable "progress" along that line in their insistence on redistribution of wealth, especially but not exclusively through 0bamacare. Dowd needn't look very far for that source of middle-class discontent, which is only now starting to bite. Misdirecting the passion away from the truly guilty is a media specialty of the moment. It isn't bankers and Wall Street who have just commandeered one-sixth of the nation's economy, it's the government, stupid!
The highly sensationalized shootings Dowd cites are a case in point with respect to this misdirection. Far from being canaries in his coal mine, they have had nothing to do with any sort of political discontent and everything to do with out-of-control, deeply disturbed mental patients. There's no Spring there.
There are, to be sure, certain very identifiable sources of discontent within young people: the government-controlled student loans market, the government-controlled mortgage arena, the government-controlled employment shortage, and now the government-controlled expropriation of health care. Notice the commonality?
If there is to be any sort of Spring, by which Dowd apparently means a mass movement in the streets, it is likely to be pointed at the above, and its name is Tea Party, and its likely direction will be to sweep establishment political types of both parties aside, and that means our Mr. Dowd.
The IRS interfered with the Tea Party, such as refusing to grant them non-profit status so they couldnt organize effectively and handing off donor lists for conservative causes to liberals to harass.

YOu know FR runs without IRS help, and it does pretty well. There is no reason in God’s creation that any protest to the current regime needs to be a tax deductible entitiy. I don’t think that those who protest need permission.
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones and worse,
And for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe.
Oh hell no. We don't need NEW. We need to leash our politicians and government back to the Constitution. It is all this new chit that has caused us to go off the rails. I don't think we have anybody smart and moral enough nowadays to create what our founders did. I don't want some crazy socialist list of rules that will take our freedoms, I want more freedom and less nanny government. Follow and be restrained with what we have!
“Forceful and non-violent”...describes a really rank and smelly fart.
Landslide
I hate to pop your bubble, but this epic government corruption includes the Republican party too.
Absolutely. They are the ones who will be stuck with paying for the excesses of previous generations.
