President Vladimir Putin stepped up criticism Thursday of a U.S.-led NATO missile defense system in Europe, reiterating Russias newly-minted argument that the nuclear agreement reached with Iran last month has removed both the threat and the Wests justification for the shield.
It was the Iranian nuclear program in particular that at one time served as the main argument for deploying the missile defense system, Putin said during an annual address to both houses of the Russian parliament.
Now whats happening? The Iranian nuclear program is going away, but the missile defense system staysand not only stays but continues to be developed.

So, Mr. Putin, it’s like this: We know Russia’s ICBM arsenal is likely capable of launching, at best, maybe 20 to 30 missiles anymore. Thus your revival of having airborne bombers on alert as if they’d be able to penetrate anyone’s airspace anyway.
That means a decent NATO ABM system could neuter Russia’s nuclear threat and that’s why you’re so worried about it.
And that’s why we need to build it.
You first, Putin.
Putin is actually asking a very good question....
So what’s the answer Obambi?
No nation that has nukes is EVER giving them up. PERIOD
Teeny bit disingenuous, isn’t he?
The scary thing is our president agrees. He does not and never thought there was a need for missile defense.
Both nukes and missiles require very expensive ongoing maintenance and that’s the problem in Russia is that they’ve got a lot of 25-year old hardware sitting around that hasn’t had any attention in 20+ years.
The biggest indicator that the Russian ICBM force is disabled is the fact that Putin reactivated the Tu-95 force to carry simple nukes, cruise missiles, or maybe just to fly around and look scary. I’d bet the latter is that case and that any of our fighters that have shadowed these planes have detected zero radiological signatures.
Oh, and by the way, Canada gave up their nuclear weapons back in the 1970’s.
President Reagan explained to one of Putin's predecessors;
trust but verify.
Reagans position came from something he learned as a boy;
be prepared.
Yeah, but that’s Canada. They probably still think we’ll protect them.
The Iranian nuclear program is going away??
Why do they need to develope ICBMs then?
To deliver Korans to your door?
Putin should and does know better.
The international community's recent nuclear deal with Iran will not make NATO scrap its plan to build a missile shield over Europe because "the decision to build a missile defense system [in Europe] doesn't have to do with just one or even two countries," the director of NATO's Information Office in Moscow said on Thursday. "We are talking about 30 countries that either already possess or are close to acquiring the technology of making ballistic missiles that can carry weapons of mass destruction," said Robert Pszel. - voiceofrussia.com
