An experiment to see if killing invasive barred owls will help the threatened northern spotted owl reverse its decline toward extinction is underway in the forests of Northern California.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Friday that specially trained biologists have shot 26 barred owls in a study area on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation northeast of Arcata, Calif.
The service is spending $3.5 million over six years to remove 3,600 barred owls from sites in Oregon, Washington and California.
It is not unusual to kill one species to help a threatened or endangered one. Cormorants and sea lions are regularly killed to help salmon.

I have seen two just this past year in the neighborhood. Took a picture of one about 5 feet up on a branch.
The spotted owl isn’t “endangered” either.
Just another excuse to control growth and productivity.
In five years they will find out the rodent population is soaring because of reduced owl predation. Then they will hire more people to shoot the rodents.
This is right out of Mao’s economic planning book.
Then we turn to eagles killed by wind farms, "In to save the spotted owl the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Funds all stopped the lumber industry - but where are they today in an effort to save the eagle? Why is it that some animals or birds can be killed and nobody cares? But destroying jobs and raising the cost of housing is no problem for the well off environmental activists in San Francisco or Seattle?" TELL THESE STORIES AND SHAME THE PEOPLE who are ruining the American way of life.
The Barred Owls just need to start donating money to the Democrats.
That was the entire point of the spotted owl, destroy a thriving industry and replace it with Marxism.
Pray America is Waking
The Eagles need better lobbyist.
Wow...just wow.
Can I move in?
Don’t worry...I would come locked, stocked and barreled!
:-)
Congrats on your great choices.
Stay on the main path with your hands clearly visible. An appointment is highly recommended. :{)
I remember the bumper sticker when this fiasco started in So OR, “Save a Logger, Eat an Owl.” There were a lot of them and a lot of loggers, now there’s few of each.
LOL
Get ready for an infestation of vermin like mice and rats, excess rabbits.
No, from the Eastern US. If fact, they breed viable hybrids. IOW, they're two races of the same species. The legal distinction by which spotted owls were listed as endangered was a scientific fraud in the first place.
“Interfering with the natural order.... shame on them. Extinction is a natural process. It should be allowed to happen.”
Think of the havoc it wold cause to the EPA if the spotted owl became extinct. They’d have to find a whole new reason to shut down the NW timber industry again.
Yep, when I first read about this I figured the enviro’s and animal activists would have a conniption fit, I was wrong.
This spotted owl thing, like George said, was about control and a way for the enviro-nazis to keep people off public lands. Enviros had gotten to the point they started to have some say in the BLM and USFS.
I can only relate to OR where many logging, USFS and BLM roads were closed by either dozing for permanent closure or gating the ones they used. Areas that had been used for years by hunters became accessible only on foot or horseback.
The woods behind my house are full of barred owls. Once a year or so the vermin population reaches a point where I see owls roosting in the backyard trees and nailing chipmunks, and mice during the daytime.
After clearing out the little critters they disappear until the menu has been replenished.
BOYCOTT FARMERS. STOP EATING
Crazy. So they are basically trying to stop a natural evolution of a species.
