Walked down the strip and checked out the Bellagio fountains and The Venetian and Ceasars. Went back to the hotel and watched tv. Couldn't wait for my flight the next afternoon.

It's been my belief that everyone should get to go to Vegas...for 24 hours.

Then, stop, that's enough.

The conventions are there because Las Vegas is there. Granted, there are lots of vacant rooms, so that helps. But I don’t think you build a city on conventioneers. You need an economic base, and gambling was that base that created Las Vegas. That base is eroding.

Now, as to an AFB being nearby, it has long been the position of the US military to find great expanses of land that are virtually worthless to anyone else. The point is to have vast tracts for training purposes. Maneuver and war take lots of practice space. Nevada certainly has its fair share of potential training space. I used to cover Army Depots in Nevada and Cali, so I’d drive 95 between LasVegas and Reno. It was easy to believe I was the only living soul anyplace in that wasteland. It had it’s own beauty, but I wouldn’t want to be on foot without a canteen.

What is the future of the air force under the liberals? I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Also, I’ve been around a lot of military towns, and even a major military base is not sufficient to spin off a major metropolitan area. It can undergird a small city, but that’s about it.

My favorite is Foxwood, Mohegan Sun and the Seminole Hard Rock. Vegas is nice but Atlantic City is bad.

Pretty much it.

I was there about 21 hours. About 20 hours too long.

I love to travel. And I love to fly. A layover in an airport can be an opportunity for me to explore an new place. To browse, check out a restaurant, watch people. But McCarran airport would be a nightmare layover for me. I don't care if all I had was 1/2 hour from the time I landed to get to my next plane.

Now, some faux Indians want to be recognized as a “Tribe” so they can open a casino near Hot Springs.

As for me, I am close to the Oklahoma line I can see the lights of the Cherokee Casino and there are lots of others all in Oklahoma. Why go to Atlantic City or Las Vegas when I can be put in the poor house just a few miles from here?

Well Chaplin, this article was about which gambling town would be the last to collapse, like Detroit, and my vote would be Las Vegas. As a past AF Officer I know what relevance Nellis is to Las Vegas. I also have been there many times in the recent past, and I also have relatives who live there and I will tell you with no uncertainty that Las Vegas will be around until the end. You can doubt that, but you will not see it’s demise.

...except, the article doesn’t mention that Vegas tourism has increased from 32 Million in 2009 to 39 million tourists in 2013.

I have been to Las Vegas AT LEAST once per year, every year, since 1986. It isn't going away.

Practically EVERY time we go, there is a new casino, or new "something". The Eye in the Sky Ferris wheel is under construction now.

LV HAS changed... a LOT. From cheap and seedy, to family oriented, back to expensive and seedy. We've stayed in several hotels than no longer exist. Such is, the CONSTANT change there. But, it remains.. FUN.

I occasionally go to one of a couple of local casinos... but, rarely. It's not the "gambling" that really interests me. Rather, it's the FUN, relaxing place to take a vacation.

Never understood the lure of casinos and gambling.

I agree that Atlantic City will collapse long before Las Vegas. I thought is was sort of bare bones in 1994 when I was at Ft Monmouth. It was a boardwalk with casinos. Las Vegas was much nicer. So, if the question is: Does AC collapse before LV, then that’s a no -brainer.

And then there was the devastating impact of the worst disaster in world history, far worse than a red giant star implosion, the collision of worlds, or even the great flood. I’m referring as you know, to Chris Christie and Barack Obama’s Hurricane Sandy, the storm from which civilization will never recover.

It didn’t help AC any, either.

As soon as Miami and other points on the water in Florida open for gambling, Vegas will be finished.

Well, I guess we agree. I was stationed at McGuire AFB for a number of years and am very familiar with Atlantic City as well.

Chris Christie is not a conservative and will do nothing to help the conservative cause.

Atlantic City was heading south long before Hurricane Sandy. It was Hurricane Connecticut that laid the damage. People from the NYC area can get to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun in the same time it takes to go to AC. Except the Conn. casinos are not surrounded with urban blight or Philly people with their cheesy mustaches. Why is that. Why do people in Philadelphia have cheesy mustaches. The Southies in Red Sox hats are a classier crowd than the Philly folk.

If Vegas fails, Dirty Harry Reid can always retire to the “Bunny Ranch” and live out his syphillitic days in the hutch.

He sounds likes he’s got mental problems and the syph is a cause of that type of behavior.

State run casino’s might be a good idea. Kind of like having a “company store”.......People would have jobs making money they could spend in the casinos. The state would reap the profits UNTIL the SHTF and they too went bankrupt.
