Tougher N.Y. gun law leads to end of AR-15 sales, rise in felony cases

ALBANY – Nearly a year after passage of the state’s new gun law, dealer sales of popular AR-15 semiautomatic rifles have ended in New York, and arrest data shows that more than 1,000 gun-possession charges in New York City were boosted from misdemeanors to felonies because of the changes.

Meanwhile, 59 people have been charged statewide with misdemeanors for possessing large-capacity magazines or having more than seven bullets loaded in a magazine, both outlawed by the law passed last January in the aftermath of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

A report from the Division of Criminal Justice Services shows that only one person charged with the illegal sale or transfer of a gun defined as an assault weapon as of mid-December. The new law tightened that definition to include AR-15s. Owners may keep their older weapons but must register them by April 15.

The problem with NY is the public and semi-public unions, like vampires sucking the life blood out of the populace.
They are lead by communists and control the politics of the state.
This includes ALL union members, especially local government, Police, Fire, Prison staff and all level of school employee.
They demand things from the public trough. Political crooks give them what they want. The elections are a joke.
They retire to warm and sunny places with their bloated pensions ($125K+ PUBLIC PENSIONS!)and bring their corruption with them.
When they come for you (and your money), there will be noone left to protest.

Anyone know where the NRA is, are they offering any legal support?

***more than 1,000 gun-possession charges in New York City were boosted from misdemeanors to felonies because of the changes”***

Does this mean the new felons will not be required to register their firearms as it violates their 5th Amendment rights?

Haynes v. United States (1968).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haynes_v._United_States

“The original Haynes decision continues to block state prosecutions of criminals who fail to register guns as required by various state law gun registration schemes.”

I have full sympathy for people that find themselves under the rule of tyrants, even if, at some time in the past, they voted for them.

Chances are most upstaters didn't vote for these tyrants. Unfortunately, they are outnumbered by the commies in the city.

Most of the ones I know are furious, but impotent to do anything about this. The county sheriffs are resisting as are many of the county legislatures but in the end the NY State Police and Albany hold all the power. They are going to continue to ram it down their throats and will probably prevail. It's all in the numbers and money. Upstate has neither.

I agree with you, I remember how all this was pushed through in recent past...

But I still have NO pity for them for not taking care of this infestation once their stink got out of the box...

The NYState government hedged their bets that no one would fight this, and they won...They believe people in their state are a bunch of cowards...

How many have a history of criminal behavior?

How many have a history of frequenting "conservative hate sites" like Free Republic?

Pre-crime, anyone?
