The Congressman Who Went Off the Grid
politico ^ | Jan 3, 2014 | JASON KOEBLER

When Roscoe Bartlett was in Congress, he latched onto a particularly apocalyptic issue, one almost no one else ever seemed to talk about: America’s dangerously vulnerable power grid. In speech after late-night speech on the House floor, Bartlett hectored the nearly empty chamber: If the United States doesn’t do something to protect the grid, and soon, a terrorist or an act of nature will put an end to life as we know it.

decentralizing the power grid is the answer

things like gen4’s hyperion power module would solve the problem

Does “going off the grid” mean that you must keep your chairs on the table?

interestingly the government did a study about an EMP attack, it’s called “report of the commission to assess the threat to the united states from electromagnetic pulse (emp) attack”
unfortunately the report was released the same day as the 9/11 commission report.....so which one got the most attention???

If anyone is interested in reading a thought provoking book about such a thing, try “One Second After” by William R. Forstchen. While the story is fiction, it brought to mind, at least for me, things I hadn’t considered.

What would EMP do to those nice solar panels?

Good for him, yet he is but one of multi millions who could even afford to go off the grid and buy these things on a government salary.
The rest of us are being herded like sheep to the slaughter by the some 600 evil peoples who make laws in DC that make themselves richer while the country and people are being slaughtered day by day.
The cruelest and worst enemies of America are the politicians of DC who should have been deported many years ago but the ignorance and greed of American citizens have brought us to this point of no return. Only the return of Christ can save us from the coming evil. Come quickly Lord and Saviour Jesus and be the King of the earth for whom your blood was shed and over whom you will rule for the Kingdom and into eternity! And let your enemies flee before you seven ways.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) is responsible for killing legislation in 2010 that would have protected the US power grid from EMP weapons and solar flares. Had the legislation been passed, by today much of the work to shield the grid would have been accomplished.

Perhaps Ms. Murkowski should read the Constitution she swore to defend. National defense is a defined role of the federal government.

Great book and very though provoking. Every town needs a group to keep the peace, keep food rations on pace, medicines to be rationed especially Insulin...even living in the hills, dear, bear, rabbits and birds will be quickly taken...stripping a food chain out of the picture.

And shoes, never thought about it— have a well stocked supply of boots, shoes, socks...

Recommend everyone read this book.....

Perhaps nothing to the panels, but the inverter electronics and controls wouldn’t fare too well.

Chairs on the table is not feng shei. He’ll never sell that cabin that way. He needs to put those chairs on the floor, set the table, and bake cinnamon cookies in the oven.

In California, being entirely off the grid will result in the state government seizing your property.

Here is a good way to stock up on your maintenance meds. Every time you refill them, take 3 out of the bottle and put them away. If your insurance plan allows for 90 days worth, take 10 out and put them away. In no time at all you’ll have a months worth put back.
