Why Pollard Will Die in Prison
ISRAPUNDIT ^ | Jan 6/14 | David Turner

I have chosen a provocative title for this article because nearing his fourth decade in prison for a crime all others similarly charged see freedom within four years, Jonathan Pollard is no more likely to be freed under Barak Obama than under George W. Bush before him or Bill Clinton before him. From today it seems no exaggeration that, barring a miracle, a young and idealistic American Jew who chose to spy for Israel will be forced to pay the ultimate price for his decision.

Jonathan Pollard had serious medical conditions at the time of his arrest in his twenties. He remains seriously ill in his fifties. And, as I suggested above, barring Divine Intervention or Israel agreeing to some extreme presidential demands bordering on extortion, Jonathan Pollard will die in prison.

Why Jonathan Pollard will die in prison

“The punishment imposed,” wrote Weinberger, “should reflect the perfidy of the individual’s actions, the magnitude of the treason committed...”

"As I say, the Pollard matter was comparatively minor. It was made far bigger than its actual importance." Pressed on why the case was made far bigger than its actual importance, Weinberger replied, "I don't know why-it just was." (Weinberger interview with Edwin Black, 2002)

I. The Legend begins

In a recent article appearing on-line Prof. Angelo Codevilla, a staff member of the Senate Intelligence Committee at the time Jonathan Pollard was arrested is quoted:

“Having been intimately acquainted with the materials that Pollard passed and with the sources and methods by which they were gathered, I would be willing to give expert testimony that Pollard is guilty of neither more nor less than what the indictment alleges.”

The allegation of “treason” which is represented as having influenced DC Circuit Judge Robinson to impose the life sentence was included in Weinberger’s unclassified “supplemental” memo:

I don’t know much about what Pollard did but I know wikipedia is a cesspool of liberalism, so if they are on his side, I am probably not.

I’ve had several years, just like the rest of us, in looking back at the overall effect of George W. Bush as President. I will say this. His drive and determination to protect this country in the aftermath of 9/11/2001 was extraordinary and I am grateful for that.

That said, I honestly believe Bush did irreparable harm to this country, too. In his zeal to defend us from without, he completely ignored those actions, forces and groups within. He even appeased and collaborated with them at times (see Ted Kennedy NCLB, Medicare Prescriptions, et al).

The most egregious and unforgivable thing he did was to create the DHS and the TSA, two of the most oppressive, freedom-stealing organizations that ever existed in this country save the IRS.

In short, he abandoned us economically, fiscally and spiritually (by his abnormal refusal to counter absurd liberal claims and actions against him.) In doing this, he rolled out the red carpet for Emperor Obama.

What dif does his sign up date make?

Treason is treason, Pollard and other traitors should die in prison, preferably at the end of rope but I’ll take old, sick alone and despised in lieu of.

I pretty much agree with you.

Nixon did much the same harm to the country by installing numerous liberal programs. “Watch what we do; not what we say”. That, not Watergate, was his real crime.

That being said, given the same alternatives, even knowing what I do now, I would make the same choice.

You are seriously misinformed. The information Pollard gave the Israelis about U.S. intelligence “sources and methods” was then transmitted by them to the Soviets in exchange for permission for additional Russian Jews to emigrate to Israel, as well as for more lenient treatment for other Jews not allowed to emigrate.

If snowden had revealed what he did, but revealed it between 2000 and 2008, would you have sung his praises?

An unequivocal YES. I'm a Constitutionalist.

Some no few of the more recent Freepers are unadorned Fascists who love The New American Police State.

As far as I'm concerned, nearly everyone in power in Washington is a traitor.

Are they in prison? Will Bill Clinton ever see the inside of a jail cell? Who is John Huang? ;-)

James Woolsey was big in the anti-Vietnam War effort. That’s all I need to know about him.

Spit.

fyi: The majority of those who understand that Pollard should have been released long since are political CONSERVATIVES. Palmer, you’ve got the scenario all wrong. You’re claiming the opposite of the reality. Those who organize and march for Pollard are CONSERVATIVES. Wake up and smell the coffee. If you are really interested in the full picture with an open mind, please do much more critical research on this topic.

p.s. I included the Wiki article of Pollard because this particular article seemed a balanced and informative one. I’m not here to defend Wikipedia in any blanket way, but it does not infrequently wind up providing an excellent first place to look on many topics and this was one. Given the extremely Leftist bias of so many news sources and publishers, Wiki paradoxically has wound up being as good as it gets in many, surely not all, cases, despite the Left’s clear aim at dominating it. You can post there, too, if you have have verified information and wish to post.

p.p.s. Having said that Wiki is often a good beginning - not final or complete - source for researching a topic, I am distressed at articles being scrubbed from Wikipedia, such as the article about the recently dead Loretta Fuddy of Hawaii.

Snowden is offering to provide classified information on US programs to Brazil, among others, in exchange for asylum.

The offer is treason.

The 4th Amendment on search and seizure doesn’t apply to protect your dealings with a third party, such as a phone company, internet provider.

4th Amendment protections have long been applied by forbidding use of the information obtained without a warrant in trial. The courts have never asserted that such information could not be gathered, but rather, that it could not be used in trial.

Intelligence information is, and has routinely been gathered without any crime being committed.

That just shows that your definition of 'traitor' is meaningless. The definition is in the constitution.

Are you one of those people who thinks that the USSR is better than the United States? Woolsey is a traitor to the United States who protected Russian spies like Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen. He was appointed by Bill Clinton and later fired by Bill Clinton because he allowed enemy spies to plunder our country.

He specifically refused to hold anyone accountable when Ames was caught, because he thought Ames did not do anything wrong. Does that sound like an admirable man?

Please explain how you think that Woolsey had an exemplary career when he was fired even by his fellow Democrats for betraying his country to communists?

James Woolsey claims to support Israel, but it’s not what I call support. He wants Israel to give all it’s land away to enemies and stop defending itself against it’s enemies. If Israel follows the Woolseys of the world it won’t exist. Woolsey is a rabid anti-Semite.

Ah! So Bill Clinton and his minions didn't commit treason by selling secrets to the Chinese in return for campaign cash?

You're full of it. Washington has sold out the country for short-term gain. And it's trivially provable.
