It has all the hallmarks of a Hollywood thriller: Big Oil mines Canada's vast oil reserves upstream from a First Nation community, while one man, a rock legend, spearheads a legal fight to avert environmental catastrophe.
That rock legend is Neil Young, who on Sunday said Canada's leaders are ridding Alberta of its First Nation communities with its giant oil sands development.
"We are killing these people. The blood of these people are on modern Canada's hands. And it will be the result not of a slow thing, but a fast, horrific thing if this continues," Young said at a press conference, citing alarming environmental destruction.

And some even do a decent job of running that development, or supervising the contract labor.
I don’t know of any in North America that truly want to live the complete lifestyle, day-in-day-out, of that from hundreds of years ago.
Keep their history and culture alive and not forgotten, absolutely. Give up their rifles, snowmachines and Gore-Tex? no way.

Does anyone remember the name of the band he was in with Rick James? (Is that a weird combination, or what?)

Guitar strings are steel. I don't imagine they located, mined, transported, refined, shipped, manufactured, packaged, delivered and sold that steel without oil.
Or for that matter anything else Mr. Young plays, plugs in, wears, drives, flies on, etc. etc. etc.
There is oil in everything, thank God.

The Canadian Oil Sands are the worlds largest oil spill. Why object to cleaning it up?

I have worked in some First Nation villagesThat reminds me of a project my daughter was working on when she was in elementary school. She was constructing models of the traditional habitats of various Native American tribes. A friend of ours, who had just moved here from Sacramento, asked her if she was building the habitats of the Pit River Indians. She said she wasn't and asked what those were, and he answered that Pit River Indians lived in abandoned cars.

Lou and Neil both put out amplifier feedback albums (Lou was first, and Neil might have put out more than one, if memory serves.) Too bad one of them is dead (which one again?) or they could have recorded a duet album of amplifier feedbacks. Art’s another great loss!
