Let's Not Kid Ourselves About Marijuana
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 15. 2014 | MITCHELL S. ROSENTHAL

Let's Not Kid Ourselves About Marijuana Adolescents are vulnerable—and not just to pot. That's how they are programmed. They make rash and risky choices because their brains aren't fully developed. The part of the brain that censors dumb or dangerous behavior is last to come on line (generally not before the mid-20s). Meanwhile, the brain's pleasure-seeking structures are up and running strong by puberty.

When you link adolescent pleasure-seeking and risk-taking to marijuana's impairment of perception and judgment, it isn't surprising that a 2004 study of seriously injured drivers in Maryland found half the teens tested positive for pot.

With public education and liberal brainwashing universities, these kids aren’t going to need those brain cells.

I understand that Cursive....is a thing of the past at this point...and that common sense is no linger common.

I suspect that the impulsivity mentioned in the article combined with a lack or morals is why we are seeing all these bizarre TEEN “fun” crimes recently.

You cannot learn history from original sources without learning cursive. Most diaries and journals up until the Vietnam war were all written in cursive.

It just isn't that much of a problem to teach this to our children, unless you need the time to teach them how to put condoms on bananas.

I sense that those who insist on teaching that later care scant little for the former..

how do such children sign their own names?

“so, like lol Bob”?.....

It is not the plant that is the problem. I knew a guy in Seattle who grew up and KNEW where the "good" mushrooms were. It was not an everyday thing for him or his friends. I know people from the deserts where peyote grow's; guess what? Marijuana is a freaking plant that flowers; that is it. Take the auspice of "illegal" away and shortly it loses flavor as an "oooohhh-aahh" its illegal, let's try it stigma. So many on this very forum have NO idea how many people they know who smoke the plant. Know why? Those people just like doing their own thing WITHOUT you judging them and they go about their business and pay their bills.

Now, abusing marijuana can happen, just as easily as abusing alcohol. I posit that alcohol is worse, akin to cocaine or heroin. Alcohol is derived from one form (a plant) and made into something else through processing. Cocaine, heroin, alcohol, anything "processed" and the human body becomes physically dependent. Marijuana is purely a 72 to 96 hour "psychological" detox unlike the afore mentioned which can kill a person trying to kick the habit (btw, if you have not seen a person DT from alk, you have not seen shit. It WILL scare you by THEIR acrions).

I am fine with marijuana being legal, it is the least bit of threat out "there". I lost my spouse to liquor and witnessed first hand their DT's and the dangers to immediate family because of which. It was not alcohol's fault; it was the person and their shortcomings.

It’s dumb to think that legalization of pot won’t hurt the most vulnerable among us.... It will.

Why doesn't Nanny ban cigarettes and booze again while they're busy protecting everyone from themselves?

Either people are FREE to choose for themselves,or they are SLAVES of the state!

Would you rather Jr score some weed from a CRIMINAL, or an honest retailer? At this moment we force our cheeruns to deal with lowlife SCUM! Prohibition is WRONG!

Look at how wonderful the LEGAL drugs are! Face eating zombies, or opiate addicted Dr junkies. Yeah that's a whole lot better than a natural non toxic flower given to us by God himself. /s

you are wrong about the dangers of weed.....

if a person drinks excessively, everyone pretty much can tell right away...not so with weed...you can bumble about and not get noticed...you won't have a breath odor nor will you be necessarily stumbling and slurring your words....but your brain is affected.....judgment for one....

so weed is not different than mushrooms or peyote?...okay....so people will eventually treat it as no big thing?....

then what?...do they go on to bigger thrills?....are we going have to legalize cocaine and meth then?....

I predict a further destabilization of our society, I predict much more crime, as people have to buy the expensive legal stuff and they'll need moola for that, and I predict that we will see just as many deaths from drugs as we do now, but probably more.....

CRAP. They smell horrible. Clothes too. You can smell it a lot farther away than alcohol too. Glassy eyes and not focusing on anything as they "bumble about", is going to be noticed.

oh, get off the soap box and stop the whining about how wonderful weed is....its as harmful, infact more harmful to your lungs and your brain as regular cigarette smoking....this has all been documented...

the problem with legal drugs is that there is massive crime STEALING them....because people being human animals just need MORE and MORE.....oxy's and hydros....xanax and valium...

if my state Washington would have just decriminalized weed, its one thing, but we're going to be producing it and selling it and charging a lot of money....

where are all these people going to get the money for that?....no one works anymore except the fools like me....

That's true ... and there is an objective reason for those differences. Think about it.

-— ?....are we going have to legalize cocaine and meth then?.... -—

Anyone, including kids, can go to the hardware store and buy some turpentine or spray paint, and get high “huffing it.” It’s a very cheap buzz. But few people do it.

OTOH, cigarette smoking, which is very addictive, is decreasing, even though it is legal, mainly because of a very effective PR campaign.

It’s going to be noticed when their brain cells are fried. I’ve seen it too many times. Alcohol addiction is bad but I haven’t seen many with fried brains after they quit. Pot heads never function the same, it’s like they are in a constant fog.
