A condemned man appeared to gasp several times and took an unusually long time to die - more than 20 minutes - in an execution carried out Thursday with a combination of drugs never before tried in the U.S.
Dennis McGuire's attorney Allen Bohnert called the convicted killer's death "a failed, agonizing experiment" and added: "The people of the state of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in their names."

Shouldn’t they be appalled at what the killer did?
Anti-DP types would call two seconds “cruel and unusual”.
He could have saved 15% or more on his auto insurance by switching to GEICO. Not that it would have mattered.
Google the meds and you learn that one of the meds is Dalaudid, and the other takes abt 15 minutes to get into a person’s system. One of the drugs can cause convulsive type activity if given too quickly.
From what I’m reading in searches, this sounds like a pretty decent combination for a death penalty. I’ve had to be injected with Dalaudid for pain and it works quickly as well as efficiently. I’m sure at a lethal dose, sleep comes quickly. You wouldn’t be very aware, if at all, with receiving the second dose of medicine.
It sounds better than what they were doing before. One of the three meds that had to be used (in the past) was potassium chloride and that stuff BURNS going in.
I would expect a body to react in some manner while dying. I’ve seen many, many natural deaths (human) and a few induced deaths (ie accidents-human) and uthenasia (animal) and it’s a body’s natural inclination to want to breath and live, even when it’s too tired to do so.
Unfortunately, most people in today’s society have never, ever, seen death of any kind, and so they’re often surprised and alarmed by what they see. Even fewer have died, and lived to tell about it, but they do exist. Most will say that the act of dying wasn’t a horrible experience at all.
As someone else already said, people have choices. You can choose to commit capitol crimes, or you can choose not to commit them. If you commit a capitol crime, you shouldn’t be surprised if you are issued a death penalty.
By the time a person receives a death penalty, on average, 2 murders were committed. When a person receives a death penalty, it may not deter someone else from committing a capitol crime, but it WILL deter the individual who did commit the kind of crime which results in a death penalty from ever being committed again, by that person. I think that’s a very good thing.
Just think, there could be a person in prison who is truly innocent of the crime he/she was convicted for, who gets killed while in prison by someone who managed to overcome a death penalty and instead, demoted to a life in prison penalty. Life in prison for capitol offenses is definitely NOT a deterrant to any crime at all whatsoever!
My heart goes out to the grieving family members who had to face this experience. But suing the state for carrying out this obligation (to carry out the sentence) isn’t the answer either. This kind of death is never pretty.
How would THEY like to be sued by the family of the victim for their loss? They certainly don’t mind BENEFITTING from the execution of their family member but I’ll bet they’d fight against taking responsibility for what he did. In some countries, the surviving family of the criminal has to pay for the execution of their guilty member. Viet Nam is one of those countries. And it doesn’t take 10 or 20 years from conviction till the sentence is carried out either.
Even if it did take 25 min to initiate and complete the sentence, it’s likely because they gave the dalaudid a few minutes to work before giving the lethal dose of the other stuff that stops the breathing. And that one can take 15 minutes to fully saturate the system.
Whoever muffed that up should step forward and I will bay them a case of Balvenie Scotch.
Yeah. It’s common to see an occasional gasp in the newly dead. That’s the most basic primitive Reptile brain reflex. Does not correlate with living.
It’s a stupid drug combo for an execution too. Give large dose of Propofol, then potassium Chloride, chase with Pancuronium. Done.
Yes, it is gruesome. I was jesting.
Now how did you know I have an engineering degree???
I was really jesting. Cutting head off a living human being is nothing short of most inhumane thing done to anyone. Only the Jihadists still practice this atrocity.
Who sez he suffered?
But in case he DID suffer a few minutes; you know what they say in Poland!
No, what do they say in Poland?
I know I’m appalled. I could get it done in .003 seconds start to finish.
To spare the sensibilities of the witnesses I suppose you’d need a good suppressor or a soundproof booth...
I have no sympathy for the killer. I don’t think it should be done humanely for his benefit. I think it should be done quickly and humanely so that society can continue to do it with as little backlash as possible.
Making the killer suffer an agonizing death is not going to bring back the victim. Administer justice, quickly and neatly so that it is done with - and don’t give the other side more emotional arguments.
Three Arab contributions to civilization.
The number zero. (prophetic?)
Wipe with your left, eat and shake hands with your right. (why not)
Execution in the public square with the sword. If you’re going to do him, be expeditious and don’t make a celebrity out of a slimebag. (ask the rolling head if he felt any pain)
guillotine is a french institution whereas hanging is a pure American one.
Last year we visited Fort Smith Arkansas to see Judge Roy Beans Gollows that could accomodate 8 criminals at a time.
Nice.
They don’t have any Model 1911A’s in Ohio?
It would take 5 seconds at most.............
Well, it was enjoyable. He was blissfully high and perhaps resisted death prolong the euphoria
I don’t think there’s ever been a problem with lethal injections before so why would they change the drug cocktail?
You cannot execute an unconscious person. By law they have to know they are being executed.
