Bevy of gun-control bills shot down in Virginia House
Virginian Pilot ^ | 1-17-14 | Bill Sizemore

The House of Delegates panel widely known as the graveyard of gun-control bills consigned a slew of them to oblivion Thursday.

The Republican-controlled subcommittee of the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee tabled a series of gun-control measures, meaning they are unlikely to be revived.

The hours-long session delighted pro-gun forces, arrayed on one side of the room wearing "Guns Save Lives" stickers, and infuriated gun-control advocates on the opposite side wearing "Background Checks Save Lives" stickers.

Rejected by the panel were these measures, all proposed by Democrats:

-- HB812, to required universal criminal background checks for firearm purchases.

-- HB535, to extend background checks to all sales at gun shows, including those by private sellers.

-- HB823, to authorize voluntary background checks at gun shows by private sellers who request them.

-- HB809, to limit high-capacity ammunition magazines to 20 rounds.

-- HB695, to stiffen training requirements for those seeking concealed-handgun permits.

-- HB992, to allow localities to ban guns from public libraries.

Kinda gets you kind of misty eyed, doesn't it?

Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) had a very good night at the General Assembly. They were the ones with the GUNS SAVE LIVES stickers.

Maybe misty eyed in VA. The expectation here in PA is to shoot down the same type of bills in committee, just like VA. What pisses me off, with a Republican controled state assembly, state senate and a Republican governor, they could exert their will and make PA into a constitutional carry state and elimnate a bunch of gun control laws in the process. I might get misty eyed then.

I know that comservatives are on the wane in PA and VA. I think part of that is due to our elected RINOs thinking that holding the line with the status quo is a victory. The status quo doesn't fire up voters to turn out on election day. Just look at the last election results in PA and VA. Comservatives sat on their unmotivated asses.

That's just what happened here in CO.

I hate to say this but the problem is probably with how PA gun owners are organized. VCDL is really incredible at playing gun politics. They’re very much of the Vince Lombardi school and are ALWAYS working to move the football forward. And they succeed pretty much every year.

Well said. Too many people don't understand the "ratchet effect" in politics; the gun-grabbers are going to keep coming no matter what, and if they manage to hold onto their gains when the GOP is in control that's a loss for us, not a win.

Lots. I’ll give you a few years. Keep in mind it’s always incremental change; here is an edited list from VCDL’s website:

2012
- Repeal the local fingerprint requirement for CHP applicants
- Prevent localities from banning firearms in personal vehicles while at work
- Prevent localities from requiring extraneous info on CHP applications
-Prevent gun bans during states of emergency
-Repealed Virginia’s One Handgun a Month rationing scheme
-Allow a CHP to be used as ID for elections

2011
-improve the issuance of new/renewal/replacement CHPs
-Got a law that allows for discharge of air guns on private property legal in all localities as long as reasonable care is taken to keep the projectile on the property.

2010
-Repeal the restaurant ban (can carry in restaurants that serve alcohol - there are no bars per se in VA)
-Allows a CHP renewal to be done through the mail.

2009
- allows localities to be sued for having invalid, preempted ordinances on their books and allows for the recovery of legal fees upon prevailing in court.
-passed a law securing individual CHP holder data from disclosure by the Virginia State Police after several instances of newspapers publishing lists of CHP holders.

For this year, there are a LOT of pro-gun bills in the hopper. Constitutional Carry has already died in committee. Not a big deal in my view: no way in hades Gov. McAwful would agree to it.

VCDL President Philip Van Cleave is the most brilliant, articulate spokesman for our 2nd Amendment rights alive, I believe. When representing our rights here, he walks on water.

Unlike some 2nd Amendment spokesment, he always calm, logical, and irrefutable. He slam dunks the libs every time.

We are so blessed to have him in Virginia, and he could do wonders for us nationally.

KUDOs Philip - and thank you for your many years of selfless incredibly hard work.....

Which reminds me, I’m overdue in renewing my VCDL membership.....

I agree. He’s also got a cracker-jack team that supports him. I just dread the day when he moves on.

If you ever want to see how conservatives COULD be winning, just take a look at what VCDL does. It works.

“Comservatives sat on their unmotivated asses.”

That’s not unusual. Mammon-worshipping conservatives aren’t involved in politics. They care more about making a buck than establishing a good life filled with freedom for their children. They’re too stupid to realize that the fortune they’re accumulating can be taken away by leftists.

These dollar-worshippers never attend schoolboard meetings, county board meetings or village council meetings. They’re too busy making bucks. Then they sit around and bitch about commies in the schools, high property taxes and cops shooting dogs. DUH!

Until conservatives wake up from their money-worshipping stupor and establish freedom zones (Committees of Safety) in their local communities like the Founders did in 1775, America can expect rough sledding during the term of the racist Nazis Obuma and Holder.

What you wrote is an accomplishment. I suppose this is a difference between Pa and Va. There is not much left in Pa to do other than constitutional carry, then you run into federal gun laws. But there haven’t been any advances for over a decade in PA.

A thankless job but somebody’s got to do it. ;-)

I dont think VA has a shortage of true conservatives. Outside of the DC area Va is pretty conservative. 65-35 in the house is a good margin. Virginia is not a bastion of liberalism just bbecause some have won state wide.

The problem Virginia has sometimes is the repub are often more conservative than the establishment. Like the last go around KC wins with any help but headqters didnt like him. They didnt like who Virginia conservatives wanted
