Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give unto you;
not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid.
John 14: 27

Lord God,

If we would just listen to You! If we would just do what You tell us to do, we could have the peace You want us to have. But so often, we allow fear, doubt, and all manner of anxious thoughts to encompass our minds. And we lose our peace.

Father, we know that peace is very important to You, and so it should be important to us as well. Our Savior died to give us peace---not the world’s peace, but the peace that passes all understanding that we have in and through Christ Jesus. Help us to seek that precious gift of peace at all times, Precious Lord.

May our troops seek Your peace too as they search for You in the midst of chaos and strife. Help them to be able to find You in the Word and in the Still, Small Voice that speaks to them. Holy God, we hunger and thirst for the peace that only You can bring.

We thank You for the life of Martin Luther King and all those who have sought to keep America a land of freedom and opportunity for all races.

Be with our Olympic athletes, Lord, as they prepare for their competitions. Guard their lives, and help them to represent this nation well.

We pray for strength for Pastor Saeed Abedini and Kenneth Bae, and all those in the persecuted church. Help them to feel the prayers of Believers upholding them.

Gracious Lord, we exalt Your Holy and Awesome Name and we thank You for being the eternal God of the Universe. Thank You that we find shelter in Your everlasting arms. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

True Greatness

January 20, 2014

Read: Mark 10:35-45

Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. —Mark 10:43
Bible in a Year:
Genesis 49-50; Matthew 13:31-58

Some people feel like a small pebble lost in the immensity of a canyon. But no matter how insignificant we judge ourselves to be, we can be greatly used by God.

In a sermon early in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. quoted Jesus’ words from Mark 10 about servanthood. Then he said, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. . . . You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

When Jesus’ disciples quarreled about who would get the places of honor in heaven, He told them: “Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45).

I wonder about us. Is that our understanding of greatness? Are we gladly serving, doing tasks that may be unnoticed? Is the purpose of our serving to please our Lord rather than to gain applause? If we are willing to be a servant, our lives will point to the One who is truly great.

No service in itself is small,
None great, though earth it fill;
But that is small that seeks its own,
And great that does God’s will. —Anon.
Little things done in Christ’s name are great things.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR OUR AMERICAN HEROES AND FOR OUR BELOVED NATION!

GEN. GEORGE WASHINGTON
THE PRAYER AT VALLEY FORGE

IN THE COLDEST and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting Glory, and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.

FROM THE BRAVE, albeit weary, ill-equipped, and untrained volunteers who marched into Valley Forge on 19 December 1777 arose, with the help of some gallant friends from across the waves, the cohesive fighting force that became the United States Army, global defender of Freedom and scourge of Tyrants.

AS GENERAL WASHINGTON lifted his prayers on high in that bleak Winter, let our prayers now rise like a fountain for our Heroes in the American Armed Forces who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and envelop them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

HEAVENLY FATHER, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these valiant men and women who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the Freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your loving embrace, that You cause Your Countenance to shine upon them, and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. Through Jesus Christ Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.
