Cops bloody old man — for jaywalking
NY Post ^ | 1/19/14 | Kevin Sheehan

Cops bloodied an 84-year-old man and put him in the hospital Sunday when he jaywalked at an Upper West Side intersection and didn’t appear to understand their orders to stop, witnesses said. Kang Wong was strolling north on Broadway and crossing 96th Street at around 5 p.m., when an officer told him to halt because he had walked against the light. Police were targeting jaywalkers in the area following the third pedestrian fatality this month around West 96th Street. Wong, who lives a block away, appeared to not understand the cop, the witnesses said.

Look, the guy was being written a ticket, instigated a scuffle, and got scraped up. Hardly deadly force.

Let me ask you, if you were in a foreign country where you didn’t speak the language, and a couple of cops put you up against a wall and started to write you a ticket, would you just assume you could walk away? Were the cops supposed to just watch him walk away? What should they have done?

He could have been a Okinawan Grand-Master Kung-Fu Shotokan killing machine - cops can’t be too careful these days. They need to make it home at night you know.

No. Stopping/detaining a jaywalker is not abuse.

Clubbing an 84 year old man? THAT is abuse.

Any cop who cannot detain an 84 year old man without bloodying him and/or requiring the assistance of 2 or 3 additional officers, should turn in his badge.

Thank you. That was a totally irresponsible headline and cover in the Post. Similar to the one they did of Wayne LaPierre calling him GUN NUT on the cover.

Not for jaywalking. For resisting being physically detained. Not the same thing.

Can cops get it into their dense heads that a Chinese guy might not understand their English?

My theory is that he had hearing impairment. Almost everyone his age has some. They tend to get in trouble simply because they don’t hear things.

You should figure that Drudge articles are ALWAYS already posted here — in this case at least twice already.

But, but, maybe I didn't see it the first time it was posted, and I am so happy I had the chance to read it this time. After all, nobody around here reads stuff from drudge.

(Heck, I saw the grasshopper and the ant story posted here yesterday, for what, the 50th time now?)

Wouldn’t it be something if this old man is from North Korea and somehow escaped and made it to the US only to find himself now in the same situation thanks to the sub-human pieces of dog filth in that city who regularly vote in Marxists, despots and all around psychopaths for office?

de Blasio’s real name is Warren Wilhelm so I always make it a point to call him that. Marxists have this thing about changing their name and I have a thing about calling them out on it. Then want to subjugate people to a political system responsible for 100 million deaths in the past 80 years, then I ain’t letting them hide, especially a blatant Marxist like Mayor Wilhelm.

He was picked out of a crowd of people jaywalking. Something everyone in NYC does. He was probably thinking he hadn’t done anything wrong.

Any kind of force used against an 85 yr old has the potential to cause death. To risk this old mans life because of a stupid jaywalking charge is idiotic.

Most likely had this man been black or Hispanic, he would not have been beaten up. Asians or whites do not start riots. Blacks and Hispanics do. The police are aware of this fact and act accordingly when they assert “authoriteh” in cities with large black or Hispanic populations like New York. Racial profiling indeed.

84 year old people should be treated with respect. They may not be able to see, hear, or think clearly.

I don’t want to live in a world like this. I will resist heartless, impersonal, heavy handed government at every turn. A small government conservative can do no less. Small government means a weaker, less pervasive government. Small government means bigger individuals. Bigger individuals means more personal responsibility. Responsibility to take care of the people around us.

Jaywalking laws are designed to protect people, ensure safety, and make society better.

How does jacking up, beating up and ticketing an old man do any of that? Was he jay walking? Yup. If safety and a better society is the goal, and there are a crowd of cops around, get the guy safely across the street. Isn’t that the job? Isn’t the job to keep people safe? Or is the job taking money from old men, antagonizing citizens and beating the crap out them? Is the job handing out sanction or preserving life? What is the purpose of cops, traffic laws, courts, judges? Tell me, what is the purpose?

Is it to better society? Or are these laws just designed to flex municipal power? I can tell you what the purpose of these laws are. The purpose of these laws is whatever we make of them. Which do you choose? Safety and well being of society, or just flexing the muscles of city hall?

Read the last paragraph of the article in which the mayor’s spokesman proclaims this new crackdown on jaywalkers.

Well, the old guy had a lot of blood on his face. If a cop can’t cuff an 84 year old man without having to bash him around, maybe he needs to go back to John Jay College.

New York jaywalkers will always be with us. Guiliani tried this stuff (I know, I was ticketed outside Saks Fifth Avenue - the cop was embarrassed writing it out) but dropped it when it didn’t seem to help.

Maybe the cops should be watching the drivers who are exceeding the speed limits and shooting through lights late at night. That might cut down on fatalities.

Dementia? Old people with dementia often do not understand and process commands/instructins. Add that to a possible language barrier.

“Hardly deadly force”
-Hardly appropriate in a supposedly free society, either. Fortunately for this old gentleman, his son is a lawyer. These fine officers will be in court soon. You can contribute to their union defense fund.

Americans used to stand up. Now, we are all cowering sheep.

Never thought I'd say it, but we could learn a lot from the '60s.

84 year old people should be treated with respect.

An 84 year old should know not to assault police, which by all accounts he did. Looks to me like he got a small cut in the fight he started. A small cut can produce a lot of blood. From the responses here you would think they shot him.

As for enforcing jay walking, I've lived in other cities, and people cross all the time oblivious to traffic they are impeding. Occasionally someone gets hit and killed, and the driver who may not be at fault has to deal with that. The point of enforcing traffic laws is to make it safe for everyone. By your standard, speeders should just be given a police escort. That would make them safe, right? Personally I get sick of pedestrians and bycyclists thinking traffic laws don't apply to them. And if the guy is so confused he doesn't know when it's safe to cross the street, or that he can't just walk away from police custody, maybe it's not safe for him to be walking around NYC by himself.

There are plenty of genuine police abuse cases out there, and I've been very critical of them. This isn't one. The cops behaved exactly like they are supposed to behave. They were writing a ticket. They guy could have just waited a minute and walked away with the ticket. If he didn't understand that, it's his fault. If he didn't want to bother to learn our language and customs he shouldn't be here, no doubt living on your tax dollars.
