The United States and Gulf countries have been secretly backing efforts by opposition rebels to destroy al-Qaedas most extreme wing in Syria, diplomats and rebels involved in the plan have told The Telegraph.
As Western leaders publicly push the Syrian regime and the opposition to the Geneva II peace conference that begins Wednesday Washington has also been quietly supporting moves by Saudi Arabia and Qatar to give weapons and cash to rebel groups to fight al-Qaedas Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) in Syria.
One source said the US was itself handing out millions of dollars to rebel groups best equipped to take on the extremists while another confirmed America was providing non-lethal aid.
The development marks a new phase in the conflict, with international backers working directly with rebel commanders to target al-Qaeda cells, who are seen as a major threat by Western intelligence agencies.

But I thought the left told us it was not possible to support one set of rebels vs another? (Afghanistan) To support the rebels is to support Al Quida right?
I don’t believe this story. Saudi Arabia is interested in defeating the Shiites and the Iranian influence, not al Qaeda. And Obama certainly has no interest in fighting al Qaeda.
Yes, plenty of American weapons and money going in there, but I’ll bet it’s all going to terrorists, just like it did in Egypt and Libya.
WAR CRIMES! WAR CRIMES!
Oh wait, the Left no longer acknowledges we are even still at war.
Syrian rebels accidentally decapitate the wrong man, ask for public for understanding and forgivene

They’ve even dropped the phrase “overseas contingency operation”.
Can’t we just stay home??
I would also add that some adovacate defeat Iran/Shiite/Shia now and worry about al Qaeda later..
So NOW we’re threading the needle, fighting Assad, but ALSO fighting “the REALLY bad guys” fighting Assad.
Who really believes we can really skate along that knife edge? This will get complicated very, very quickly. This is not like a cock-and-bull session in the faculty lounge.
My guess is this will anger Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Syria —all three equally at the same time.
Oooh goodie, now we can double secretly back the Saudis by having our military fight as mercs for them so no Saudi Muslims need die. After all, the Saudi bribes to the American left and RINOs are good.
For the disabled veterans, not so much.
Uh I think the rebels are Al Quaeda. Or heavily infiltrated with them.
My guess all along was that Benghazi was a CIA Black Op to funnel guns from Libya to Syrian rebels...that is why all these cockamamie cover stories and videos that no one saw. Cause Hillary did not want to admit this was not diplomacy but more like Iran Contra and we know how that went.

What’s new? The CIA has been secretly funding Extremists like Al-kada since Jimmy Carter in ‘79.
Wait a minute??? So we are helping those killing McLame’s buddy terrorists?????
Steaming pile of dung alert.
Who are the rebels going to use the weapons on after they defeat al Qaeda?
Now, are we supporting the Varsity or Junior Varsity Al Qaeda?
Lets rephrase that, obamma secretly backs al queda.
Assad would have been smoking in Hell by now if Zero had sent something besides non-lethal aid a few years back, right after Assad started gunning people down and the FSA self-organized. Instead, the jihadist supporters in the OPEC states grabbed the reins, and have been fighting it out ever since. Frankly, a failed state in a constant state of civil war — basically, a larger version of Lebanon — is and has been for years the best possible outcome.
The other al Qa group, al-Nusrat front, wants just Syria and the OTHER jihadi groups have different ideas
It's just one extremist arguing with another. all of them are enemies.
In the end Stalin was a lot more bloodthirsty than Hitler. both were monsters, but Stalin won the “who can kill more” competition
