The flags in the cells are decals approx. 3X5 inches. They are not cloth, plastic, etc.

Out of the approx. 8900 prisoners in our jail system, only a very few have ever defaced the flags. And remember, we are constantly getting new prisoners every day.

Many of the prisoners are in fact somewhat patriotic.

Only 7 days?

This crime deserves bread & water for the rest of their time spent.

Bread and water for the rest of their sentence? You do know that would kill them? A death sentence for trashing a flag is ridiculous.

*Bread and water for the rest of their sentence? You do know that would kill them?*

They used to feed prisoners on bread and water in the old days and it didn’t kill them.

A rope? What would you do with a rope? you ever been to Maricopa county? Its very flat. You don’t need a rope to escape a one story building. Things are spread OUT, not up.

Sounds like you’ve never hunted rattlers. You pump something noxious into their lairs. Something they hate, like gasoline. Then they come crawling out.

Sheriff Joe was just smoking out a few rattlers. Now that they are identified, they are on bread and water. The flag in the cell is about having them self-identify for further communication and intervention.

He should out the whole prison population on bread and water for this act by a “few” ...let the population deal with the punishment of the few. If I was put on bread and water because of somebody else’s “act”...I’d find a way to keep that from happening again.

still, there is no reason for the expense of adding a flag to each room

Am I not getting my point across? These are not normal human beings, these are criminals.

What requirement is there for a flag in each room?

I am not anti-flag, or unpatriotic, I am just saying why give criminals an excuse or reason to do more stupid things?

It was unnecessary to their incarceration or “rehabilitation” It invites reaction, unnecessarily.

And I support Sheriff Joe 100%. I love it that he stuck them in tents and made them wear pink.

IIRC (from reading about Sheriff Joe over several years), Sheriff Joe decided at one point it was too expensive for the taxpayer to allow the prisoners to sleep in the jail building, especially when U.S. troops were overseas with less.

So, he moved the prisoners outside to a tent city and they were only allowed in the jail building once a week to clean it.

Then he realized more taxpayer money could be saved by not allowing the prisoners coffee and cut hot meals to twice a day (or once?), with lunch being bread and bologna.

He tried to cut their cable, but apparently, Kongress had decided cable tv was a "right" and made it a law......so, the prisoners can watch two channels (something silly).

The prisoners' uniforms are pink; pink jumpsuits, pink socks, pink underwear.

And the prisoners do manual labor. Sheriff Joe's "rehabilitation program," isn't the Disney World version liberals fantasize for prison and my understanding, Sheriff Joe does it on the cheap. - The prisoners are not having a good time.

So is your reading ability. “ridiculous” that is.

Am I the only one who thinks it is idiotic?

Nah. There are probably a half-dozen FReepers who think putting flags up in the jails is idiotic.

Gee, a piece from CNN that describes sheriff Arpaio as controversial. Who'd have guessed?

I'm pretty sure it's part of the CNN spell-checker software.

Huh? Are you aware it isn't ordinary bread?

Am I the only one who thinks it is idiotic? Why spend money on “patriotic” stuff for the damn prisoners?

He is teaching them discipline and consequences.
