For the third year in a row, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is poised to deliver a bold, no-holds-barred, anti-tobacco message to the American public.
Starting Monday, the agency will launch the 2014 phase of "Tips From Former Smokers" (Tips), an ambitious annual TV, radio and print campaign.
As was the case during its first two incarnations, the upcoming Tips campaign, which will last nine weeks, will feature real people speaking in frank and often frightening terms about the high price paid for a lifetime of exposure to cigarettes.
"Over 20 million Americans have died because of smoking since 1964," said Dr. Tim McAfee, the Atlanta-based director of the CDC's office on smoking and health. "Now think about that number -- it's huge. It's the number of people in the Soviet Union who died during World War II. But when you talk about a number that big, people have no way to put their hands around it.
"So we thought that for smokers and non-smokers," McAfee added, "we needed to put a face on this. Because we felt that if we gave the American people an opportunity to get to know the suffering one person has had to go through because of smoking, it could have an enormous impact."
With that in mind, the 2012 Tips campaign was designed to grab the attention of 18- to 54-year-olds by exposing them to about a dozen audio-visual messages from former smokers who spoke in stark terms about how tobacco had crippled their health.

Nanny State PING!
Will they feature a spot “Toking ain’t Smoking” to appease His Arrogance and Moo and the rest of the liberals?
What about smoking pot, it’s smoking after all!
Can’t wait for the CDC to campaign against the horribly dangerous results and health risks of male homosexual activity that reduces their overall lifespan by over 30 years. Yeah . . . cant wait . . .
So do I understand this right... When people want to commit suicide, do they go out to the garage anf=nd “burn” one, or do they start their car?
They had best be careful. Over The Top Scare campaigns like this may put people off from smoking marijuana too. Others may not want to sell it because of liability and litigation. The New Pot Market may dry up, and blow away, just when certain states are now calculating their future earnings from pot sales. The other possible outcome is that the scare films will be so exaggerated as to become a standard joke, the way Reefer Madness or V.D. films used to be, when shown to junior high schoolers.
Thanks for the ping!
When will they air alcohol commericals that show people drunk going into rages, or killing people by driving drunk?
I always find it amusing that these liberal pukes (especially the college age crowd) love to show graphic pictures of cancerous lungs, mouth and lips associated with smoking, but pitch a fit when a pro-life group tries to post pictures of precious aborted babies. Hmmm, now why would that be?
I believe it would do our culture good to see the precious babies that have been aborted, and the utter torture they endured! Let them see first hand the severed arms, legs, and crushed skulls! The Left are a bunch of ghouls!
Notice that they never ban it because they make too much money from it from the taxes the government imposes on it so they roll out an anti-smoking campaign.
One picture of bo smoking, then morph into him with moochelle.
That should stop ANYONE from smoking.
Twenty million?
That’s fewer than the number killed by abortions since 1964.
That’s fewer than the number of illegal aliens since 1964.
That’s fewer than the number of people on food stamps or extended unemployment payments TODAY.
I’m really sick of the liberal mantra and nanny state.
I guess the higher ups have told the CDC they need to foment some more outrage about smoking because the government needs more penalty and tax money.
This is just further confirmation that the CDC is more political than ‘medical’. Add this bag to the “wife beater series,” “the gun in the home series,” and all the other irrelevant non-medical studies, programs and BS they concoct.
Maybe it’s a good thing, though, at least there not out there creating some rabid flu virus inoculation like the Swine Flu serum. I took their ‘cure’ in the early 70s and it took me a decade to get over the effects.
But pot smoking is good for you. The reason? it keeps the population indulging lethargic so the regime and it’s minnions can be even bolder and more transparent without having to hide and worry of reprisals. Another tool to keep them dumb and numb
As I tell my doc, Im more concerned with asbestos exposure than my cigarettes. Ive already had a couple friends come down with mesothelioma.
Yeah, anyone smoking two to three packs a day of "joints" is probably doing as much damage to his lungs as someone smoking an equal number of tobacco cigarettes.
Only no one smokes 40-60 "joints" a day.
Regards,
TOBACCO BAD !!!
CHOOMING GOOD !!!
