US ready to return to moon

America is preparing to land a robot on the moon for the first time in four decades.

Nasa is looking for private partners to participate in the project that will see a new generation of rovers wandering across the moon’s surface.

The American space agency has set up a programme called Catalyst to exploit commercial opportunities offered by the moon.

It believes that eventually there will be a market for commercial cargo trips to the lunar surface.

"As Nasa pursues an ambitious plan for humans to explore an asteroid and Mars, US industry will create opportunities for Nasa to advance new technologies on the moon," said Greg Williams, Nasa's deputy associate administrator for the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate.

NASA - end it, don’t mend it. The future of space is private. Let’s not go backwards FReepers.

Great. The nation is $17 trillion in debt, bogged down in an unwinnable war, and being overrun by millions of invaders from Mexico.

Priorities.

I agree we need to stop spending American money, buying things from China.

We need to make things in America.

However I seem to be in the minority on this topic. Nobody in either party, seems to be for American jobs.

I am also (all) for America’s active, and aggressive space program.

100%.

Absolutely.

I’m for American jobs, but not boondoggles to the moon. We can’t afford it anymore. If an expedition to the moon is all that important, private companies will make it happen.

But the government.. especially THIS government should stay clear of it.

“Didn’t everyone mock Newt Gingrich for suggesting during the primaries that we should go back to the moon? “

No, we mocked him for saying we needed to establish a colony there by 2020 and make it the 51st state when 13000 people were there and for him unveiling this program just before the Florida primary speaking (pandering) on Florida’s space coast.

I thought we no longer had a space program. I though Obama abolished it. I thought it was devoted to whining about global warming.

Private industry is using NASA trained engineers and scientists who were laid off and now have to work cheap.

They are just mining institutional knowledge and haven’t done a damn thing themselves.

"I work at NASA. This guy [Charles Bolden] is a walking, talking leadership vacuum. If he had any leadership qualities, he checked them at the door when Obama appointed him. No original thoughts, no original ideas, no confidence, nothing."

Thanks for clarifying. If he's such an empty suit, how can he have had such a distinguished career in the USMC and retired as a MG? How can he not be pushing back against our Moron-in-Chief?

It just doesn't make any sense.

"What's next, corporate sponsorship of aircraft carriers: "

It happened during the Clinton Administration as well. Dan Goldin was a huge proponent of the commercialization of space, in concert with dramatic NASA budget reductions. Seems to be a recurring theme with the Democrats, e.g., cut budgets paying for very accomplished engineers all while increasing welfare (e.g., food stamps).

Roger that. We have $17 trillion in debt not because of moon missions or the DOD budget but because of entitlements, excessive social services spending, an ungainly bureaucracy, and a monstrous set of regulations that thwart business. We need moon missions, or at least continuous moon research, to bring pride to Americans and show the freakin' Chinese that we are not about to surrender space superiority to them.

Institute Ron Paul's penny plan and we will have whipped the annual budget deficit in a very short amount of time.

Yep...... There’s no telling what our companies are dreaming up

Aside from a launch pad, They are quite capable of joint venturing a package with a rover.

For what purpose I don’t know. What ever the purpose, it will smell of money

Well honestly we also have $17 trillion in debt, because we buy far too many things from abroad.

Bring back jobs, to America.

Now.

Your cynicism is warranted.

“...US industry will create opportunities for Nasa to advance...”

That’s all their interested in, getting their fingers on commercialization of the moon.

It’s Pay-to-Play.
