Alleged pact between U.S. and Russian judges would shut Canada out of figure skating gold

Figure skating, a sport that has long faced serious credibility problems over its judging, appears to be on the cusp of another scandal.

French publication L’Equipe has reported that the United States and Russia have struck a deal to mutually assure higher marks for their countries, while also shutting out Canada from the gold.

The allegation implies the pact would see the U.S. judge dish out favourable marks to Russia in the team event, where the U.S. is not a contender for the podium, in exchange for the Russian judge boosting the scores for Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White in the ice dance.

I don’t like events that need to be judged to get a score. Speed skating yes, ice dancing no.

I kind of agree with you, but the events with subjective judging - skating in the winter, gymnastics in the summer - attract the largest audience. A case can be made that, without these events, the money to run the Olympics at all wouldn’t be raised.

This was reported by the French?

In 2002, the Canadian pair of skaters clearly won. French judge, Marie-Reine Le Gougne was pressured by the head of the French skating organization, Didier Gailhaguet, to vote for the Russian skating pair regardless of how the others performed. She admitted this to one of the official of the International Skating Committee.

The event referee filing a formal complaint about the judging. The IOC gave two pairs of gold medals - one to the Russian pair and one to the Canadian pair.

There's a history of corruption in Olympic judging in skating that makes the Canadians sensitive to these allegations.

I remember watching this- the Russians had a very obvious mistake in their routine- the Canadians were flaw less. It was just so apparent one of the Judges was bribed in favor of the Russians.

So in order to make the French happy, I guess the Americans and the Russians won’t be allowed to win now, even if they deserve to.
