O'Malley seeks answers from DHS on immigration program
The Baltimore Sun ^ | February 11, 2014 | John Fritze

WASHINGTON — — Gov. Martin O'Malley on Tuesday demanded that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security explain why federal officials are deporting a higher share of noncriminals from Maryland than from most other states under a controversial immigration program called Secure Communities.

In a sharply worded letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, the governor called on the federal agency to document why the program has led to the deportation of undocumented immigrants with either no criminal record or only misdemeanor convictions, when its long-stated intent is to target dangerous criminals.O'Malley, a Democrat, wrote to Johnson days after The Baltimore Sun reported that the share of noncriminals deported under Secure Communities in Maryland is twice the national average.

More than 40 percent of the immigrants who have been deported from Maryland under the program since 2009 had no prior criminal record, according to government data.

"DHS has continuously assured us that the Secure Communities program would focus on violent criminals who pose a threat to national security and public safety," O'Malley wrote in the two-page letter. "Unfortunately, the data continues to demonstrate that DHS too often deviates from this stated priority."

O'Malley requested that the department detail, within 10 days, the basis for removing low-level criminals or noncriminals from Baltimore, where the state manages the local jail. He also sought an analysis to explain why Maryland appears to be deporting a higher share of those immigrants and a summary of any policy changes to address the issue.

I just know Advocates also believe our nations borders must allow entry of all low level offenders, who have they claim no prior criminal record,to be free to enter America and wait around for congress to make them legal. I like this here..why the program has led to the deportation of undocumented immigrants with either no criminal record...oh but wait or only misdemeanor convictions.Im Maryland misdemeanor convictions, include drunk driving, repeated offenders caught driving without licencses/insurance,tax fraud, stealing citizens personal information. Why doesn't Maryland tell washington they will accept full responsibility for all illegals and pay for any damages, medical bills, any fatal accidents caused by illegals drinking and driving Maryland will serve as the illegals insurance plan and pay all claims. Will put illegals who rape and molest children in rehab,etc,etc,etc.. Why bother with any laws anyway.. He loves the illegals so much excuse them from all the laws.

Why doesn't Maryland along with Calif become their own countries and all the illegal aliens dreams shall come to be.

Lighten up Marty! We’ve got tons of illegals here in Arizona. If you run out, we’d be happy to send you a bunch.

My governor. Gave them in-state college tuition aid and drivers licensees.

Passed gay marriage,
Passed sale tax, gas tax, liquor and alcohol tax increases, casinos and speed cameras.

Guess he wants illegals here paying all those taxes.

I believe in long, very long, sentences for elected officials who willfully protect and harbor illegal aliens.

RE :”I believe in long, very long, sentences for elected officials who willfully protect and harbor illegal aliens.”

I look back at Reagan's amnesty immigration reform and am amazed that 1980s Republicans didn't call for a law making it a felony for adults to bring and/or leave minors here who are illegal.

They must have known what a political problem having large #s of kids growing up here illegally (as illegals) graduating from public school here.

They couldn't even fight for that way back then?

That may have been President Reagan’s worst mistake. Rewarding lawbreakers is never a good idea, especially when doing so can open the floodgates beyond all comprehension. The message this government sends to foreigners is that it is A-OK to become an illegal, since they probably won’t be punished, and they’ll get tons of bennies. If I was down on my luck elsewhere with that message, what would you have to lose by risking coming here ? At worst, you get sent back, at best you keep coming back until they don’t bother deporting you anymore. What an awful system.

President Reagan's, yes probably.

Before he was President he made a bigger one. Unite the party and all that, but at a terrible price.

RE :’That may have been President Reagan’s worst mistake.

It worked out pretty well for him, recall that we are talking ~ 25 years ago.

Now we have a big problem. Notice as part of Reagan amnesty they didn't make it a crime to bring in or leave illegal minors. That insured a another growing political problem.

Similar with his social security reform, raised taxes and cut benefits and just spent the extra $$$ on other unrelated stuff (aka trust fund) .
