Cruz: GOP senators think they have 'foolish, gullible constituents'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) explained fellow Republican senators’ anger over his filibuster of the debt ceiling vote by saying that they hate being “forced to tell the truth.”

“In the 13 months I’ve been in the Senate it has become apparent to me the single thing that Republican politicians hate and fear the most, and that is when they’re forced to tell the truth. It makes their heads explode,” Cruz told radio host Mark Levin Thursday.

Cruz tried to filibuster a vote in the Senate to raise the debt ceiling Wednesday, forcing the approval of 60 senators instead of a simple majority. That required Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to take a politically risky vote in favor of the increase. “Make no mistake about it, this was their desired outcome,” Cruz said. “A lot of the Republicans wanted exactly what Barack Obama wanted, exactly what Nancy Pelosi wanted, exactly what Harry Reid wanted, which is to raise the debt ceiling, but they wanted to be able to tell what they view as their foolish, gullible constituents back home they didn’t do it.”

Cruz pointed out that in the weeks before, Republican senators had been saying that they wanted concessions attached to the increase, not the “clean” bill that ended up passing.

“It’s like they think the American people are just a bunch of rubes, that we don’t remember what they say,” Cruz said.

The proof will come over the course of the year. If Graham and McConnell and Alexander and Cornyn win their primaries then it will be evidence that they do have foolish, gullible constituents.

RNC committeeman Dave Agema has it right, the party platform is nothing but voter bait but doesn’t mean anything beyond that.

Cruz doesn’t just know the lyrics, he also has the tune down pat.

Rush is convinced that 2014 will dwarf 2010. Of course, he was also convinced of a Romney win, but I digress.

Cruz has proven to m that he’s much more worthy of the title of president than the lying POC turban head we havd occupying the throne at the moment. Cruz hit the nail on the head with that comment. They really do think we are that stupid to take them at their word anymore.

Cruz is right again. GOP voters are duped all the time and the knaves they elect fully exploit this gullibility.

Elected officials should be expected to stand for things and be held accountable rather than being rewarded for continuously finding ways to cave in to the opposition.

True to some extent or we would not have so many corrupt and incompetent politicians in office.

I don’t recall Rush being convinced of a win in 2012. I think he was hopeful the country would reject Obama, and many of the traditional signs were there in the year leading up to it. But he hemmed and haa’ed all summer and through the convention about the Romney campaign tactics.

Amazing statement.

This is as close as he can get to “anyone but Cornball” without saying just exactly that.

I recall the day of the election Hannity predicting a fairly decisive Romney win.

Obviously we were all wishfully thinking.

I do think congressional elections are a very different animal.

That said, I’m not sure our side (speaking generally, including GOP types) has it in them to come out in droves.

I just don’t know.

But I sure like Cruz.

Cruz exposed the RINO’s in a way we have never seen.

Thank you Ted Cruz.

That's a foolish, gullible statement, Teddy.

They are part of the elite, political class (as are you) and you are the jitterbug sent out to appease the masses.

I have zero faith in anything political ... you've all become comic book reading.

The serious ones are pounding at my door .... maybe not now ... but soon, I believe.

YOU'RE just appeasing me until it happens.

Yep...he stripped them nekkid, and they hate him for it. Be sure to vote your quisling out in the primaries. We will do our best to fire Cornyn in Texas.

Ted Cruz’ motto should be (if it isn’t already):

“If it’s crazy but it works, it ain’t crazy!”

(I want to see a President Cruz so bad my bones ache.)
