Ilion, N.Y. A union official said Saturday the Remington Arms Co.'s decision to open a manufacturing plant in Alabama does not bode well for Ilion, and he's blaming New York's Safe Act restrictions on assault weapons.
"It can't be good," said Fran Madore, president of United Mine Workers Local 717, which represents 1,180 of the 1,300 Remington employees in Ilion. "How can it be good?"
Madore said plant officials told him they wanted to meet with him on Monday. They did not say what they wanted to talk about, but Madore said he assumes it will be about the company's reported plans to open a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.
AL.com reported Saturday that the Huntsville facility could employ up to 2,000 people. It said details could be revealed on Monday about plans for a Remington facility in a former Chrysler plant near Huntsville International Airport....
"The SAFE Act has been a terrible thing from the beginning," he said. "You'd think New York would be doing everything to keep us. Instead, it passes a law that cripples us."
Remington and other firearms makers can still manufacture assault weapons in New York, but they can't sell them inside the state. New York lawmakers, at the urging of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, imposed the restrictions after a man armed with an assault rifle massacred twenty children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012.

Well, he’s right. Cuomo’s gun control laws should be blamed.
Sorry, that means I feel the same as you.
Some reporter should ask Fran: “Who did you and your members vote for in the last election?”
Strange union for a gun factory to have, isn’t it?
many of the union folks, and most union leadership voted for thelib politicians who passed the safe act.
i cnnotfeel sorry, for these particular people. you vote for libtards, you get laws from libtards, and live under the consequences of libtard laws.
Are we surprised that SonofMario would be any different?
This is what the people of New York voted for - more government, more socialism, more theft of other people’s money, etc.
What I would like to see is a company hired boxer smashing the face of the union thug before the company leaves. Union tactics turned on them!!!
A business would move away from where it’s hated? Say it isn’t so!
This is what the people of New York CITY voted for - more government, more socialism, more theft of other peoples money, etc.
There, fixed it.
Union vs Dems: ruh row, cat fight/
Get over it and move out.
“Well Fran, from my point of view...”
Great reply...Let the Commie Rats rot.
The only true America that is left is down in Dixie.
Been to the border of PA and NY farm counties. PA allows fracking and their small town folks are driving around in brand new pickup trucks. Meantime NY refuses to allow it, and their small town folks drive in beat up pick up trucks. NY and PA border is like East Berlin vs West Berlin during the Cold War.
I noticed that too
and to quote a long lost friend of mine....
Sometimes u have to die a woodpeckers death...
I sincerely hope that Fran will lose her union position and spend some time flipping burgers at McDonalds.
It will liberate 1300 people from the drudgeries of work. They can stay home, raise their kids, and pay their obamacare premiums. It is the republicans that want people to work so hard, and they are leaving the state. What are you complaining about?
You can imagine the scenario. Remington exec talks to the union guy. Company will dissolve completely in NY. Company will end union episode...but offer a friendly deal of moving up 500-odd employees to Alabama as part of the new plant. Union will argue that it must move lock, stock and barrel with the company. Company will say that this deal dissolves in NY state and exists no more. How many guys would want to move to Huntsville? That would be an interesting question. And I’m guessing that a ten-percent wage cut is somewhere in the mix because there’s lesser taxes and less cost involved. This will disturb most guys if offered the deal.
As for more future employment for a former Remington guy in NY state? Well...I doubt if there’s anything, and the state won’t do much to attract new companies....because their tax revenue deal is so bad. Basically...you sit on federal unemployment pay for a long while, then flip burgers or serve people at some bar.
Finally, this ought to be a reality series on the History Channel....as these New Yorker guys arrive and assimilate in Huntsville. It will be a definite culture shock. Would be worth watching weekly on TV.
Sorry, you are more accurate.
Naive or stupid, or both?
Well, when they made the deal to move the high end AR production to a plant in Texas, they offered many of the workers a move to the Texas plant. From what I heard most of them were excited about moving and did. Lower cost of living, no state income tax and a very pro gun climate.
NY sure shot itself in the foot. hee hee hee
“Strange union for a gun factory to have, isnt it?”
Maybe it’s a connection with lead and copper, both of which are mined. Well in any case, we have a restive union in the bluest area of the country, let’s pop some corn and enjoy the show! ;)
Yup. You deserve the government you vote for. And they got what they deserve for such irresponsible votes.
And they can pursue their passion.
Unless that involves firearms.
Which it might, since they all work in a GUN FACTORY!
That’s what happens when you vote for stupid Commies. Elections have consequences, after all.
What kids? They’ve probably aborted them all.
And yet their union will continue to support the Democrat pols who voted for it. And support Obama’s war on coal too, Mr. Mine Worker.
Fran, maybe Cuomo will get some state money to retrain your workers to go work in the ever growing Fracking Industry in NY...
Oh wait, he can't, Andrew the magnificent Fubar'd that Industry too...
Alabama RUTS New York! Glee!
if memory serves, the place was founded by the original remington around the revolutionary war period. they still have one of the guns he made.
you wonder, does anybody in the NY state government ever think that maybe sometime in the future you might want a local arms maker? i mean those guys have been there 200 years, that's a lot of history to arrogantly turn over.
sometimes things change, and not for the good.
Actually, the Sandy Hook shooter was not armed with an assault rifle. Even if using an AR-15, it is not an assault rifle. It only shoots one round at a time.
Reports I remember say that the end result was he had used pistols.
Cuomo is a disaster for this state and America this disaster awaits you if you elect Hillary Clinton as your next President. New York politicians specialize in wrecking economies. I live in upstate New York and I watched it deteriorate over the last 50+ years. The Republicans are no better with most of them being RINOS. For example my Republican congressman Gibson is a sellout and now can be classified as a RINO. To make make matters worse he is running against a homosexual who is married to one of the founders of Facebook. Whoever wins will be a loss for New York State citizens. I’m glad we can still move to a more hospitable state when we are ready to go.
Oh the state is trying to attract new companies. While channel surfing the other day I came across on a Buffalo tv station an ad touting New York as a place to come to to open new businesses. It was offering a tax free enterprise zone or a tax free period of a number of years or something. They know they are hemorrhaging and want the bleeding to stop. It actually shocked me for a moment. Never seen anything like it in years gone by.
No, he used the AR.
My memory says they found it in the trunk afterwards.
Either way, it isn’t an assault rifle.
No they didn’t.
Agreed on the “ASSAULT RIFLE!” Aspect.
I’m 1 degree of separation from an EMS 1st responder who spent a lot of time on scene. There was a lot of .223/5.56 brass.
I hope Remington doesn’t bring a whole lot of NYers with them it might poison the water.
I think there is a Remington in Louisiana already...Shreveport no?
So they’ve gone south before
Put up a “Checkpoint Charlie” sign :)
Cuckoo Cuomo, Fran, and Ilion.
F the new New York - Yeah, they really are trying hard to get new business to move in!
It'd be a net positive for the site as a whole if such were to occur as a matter of course.
imho, of course
