Ilion, N.Y. — A union official said Saturday the Remington Arms Co.'s decision to open a manufacturing plant in Alabama does not bode well for Ilion, and he's blaming New York's Safe Act restrictions on assault weapons.
"It can't be good," said Fran Madore, president of United Mine Workers Local 717, which represents 1,180 of the 1,300 Remington employees in Ilion. "How can it be good?"
Madore said plant officials told him they wanted to meet with him on Monday. They did not say what they wanted to talk about, but Madore said he assumes it will be about the company's reported plans to open a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.
AL.com reported Saturday that the Huntsville facility could employ up to 2,000 people. It said details could be revealed on Monday about plans for a Remington facility in a former Chrysler plant near Huntsville International Airport....
"The SAFE Act has been a terrible thing from the beginning," he said. "You'd think New York would be doing everything to keep us. Instead, it passes a law that cripples us."
Remington and other firearms makers can still manufacture assault weapons in New York, but they can't sell them inside the state. New York lawmakers, at the urging of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, imposed the restrictions after a man armed with an assault rifle massacred twenty children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012.

It will liberate 1300 people from the drudgeries of work. They can stay home, raise their kids, and pay their obamacare premiums. It is the republicans that want people to work so hard, and they are leaving the state. What are you complaining about?
You can imagine the scenario. Remington exec talks to the union guy. Company will dissolve completely in NY. Company will end union episode...but offer a friendly deal of moving up 500-odd employees to Alabama as part of the new plant. Union will argue that it must move lock, stock and barrel with the company. Company will say that this deal dissolves in NY state and exists no more. How many guys would want to move to Huntsville? That would be an interesting question. And I’m guessing that a ten-percent wage cut is somewhere in the mix because there’s lesser taxes and less cost involved. This will disturb most guys if offered the deal.
As for more future employment for a former Remington guy in NY state? Well...I doubt if there’s anything, and the state won’t do much to attract new companies....because their tax revenue deal is so bad. Basically...you sit on federal unemployment pay for a long while, then flip burgers or serve people at some bar.
Finally, this ought to be a reality series on the History Channel....as these New Yorker guys arrive and assimilate in Huntsville. It will be a definite culture shock. Would be worth watching weekly on TV.

Well, when they made the deal to move the high end AR production to a plant in Texas, they offered many of the workers a move to the Texas plant. From what I heard most of them were excited about moving and did. Lower cost of living, no state income tax and a very pro gun climate.

if memory serves, the place was founded by the original remington around the revolutionary war period. they still have one of the guns he made.
you wonder, does anybody in the NY state government ever think that maybe sometime in the future you might want a local arms maker? i mean those guys have been there 200 years, that's a lot of history to arrogantly turn over.

Actually, the Sandy Hook shooter was not armed with an assault rifle. Even if using an AR-15, it is not an assault rifle. It only shoots one round at a time.
Reports I remember say that the end result was he had used pistols.
Cuomo is a disaster for this state and America this disaster awaits you if you elect Hillary Clinton as your next President. New York politicians specialize in wrecking economies. I live in upstate New York and I watched it deteriorate over the last 50+ years. The Republicans are no better with most of them being RINOS. For example my Republican congressman Gibson is a sellout and now can be classified as a RINO. To make make matters worse he is running against a homosexual who is married to one of the founders of Facebook. Whoever wins will be a loss for New York State citizens. I’m glad we can still move to a more hospitable state when we are ready to go.
