Air Force will take ‘appropriate action’ over viral POW/MIA emblem photo

WASHINGTON — The Air Force is “disappointed” in the airman who appeared in a photo that is being circulated of her posing with her tongue in the mouth of the prisoner of war depicted on the iconic black-and-white POW/MIA emblem.

“We do not yet have all the details behind the photo, but it certainly is a concern; it’s a concern any time someone shows disrespect for prisoners of war and those missing in action,” Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Cody said in a statement. “They deserve our utmost respect and we must always remember their sacrifice and the legacy they’ve left for us as men and women serving our nation.

Please remove the image from my post. I was composing the post as post # 17 was made. Once is more than enough, and we don’t need the high resolution.

Too little/too late to fix the much broader problem plaguing the military (look at the role model CIC).

Exactly right — what's worse is apparently that no officer has the "standing" to demand proof of eligibility.

National League of POWMIA Families is a private organization. I don’t think that they even receive any public funds. So what action could the AirForce take that couldn’t be opposed in court?

“On August 10, 1990, the 101st Congress passed U.S. Public Law 101-355, which recognized the League’s POW/MIA flag and designated it “as the symbol of our Nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for their families and the Nation”.

The importance of the League’s POW/MIA flag lies in its continued visibility, a constant reminder of the plight of America’s POW/MIAs from all wars, including those now ongoing.

“Other than “Old Glory”, the League’s POW/MIA flag is the only flag ever to fly over the White House, having been displayed in this place of honor on National POW/MIA Recognition Day since 1982.”

From their website, but how can that translate into legal action. We’re not talking about Acorn or Operation Push after all.

What she did was childish and stupid. But if she had been a sodomite sticking his tongue in the mouth of the POW nothing would have been said about it. They do what they feel like doing and dare you to do anything about it. The sodomite would have immediately started hollering that he was being singled out because was transgenderLBGTPMSNCBgender confused.

Things like this can be (and are, in my experience) handled under UCMJ Article 134:

“Article 134. General article:
Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special, or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court.

—10 U.S.C. § 934”

Kind of a catch-all that covers all sorts of dumbassery

All my years of dedicated law enforcement service in that armpit of the world Cook County, IL, tells me that in this case that UCMJ Article will be interpreted in the defendant’s favor.

>> Much ado about nothing. This is America, a free country.

Hmmm... so, in your opinion, this pig enjoys “freedom of expression”... but those of us who are disgusted should refrain from expressing our disgust?

IOW, she is entitled to be free of the CONSEQUENCES of her act?

Please tell me more about your concept of freedom.

I think that’s a bit of an overreaction.

As the senior NCO of an Infantry battalion, I can tell you that commanders do charge service members on dumb-ass twitter and waste-book postings that bring discredit on the service. And I have yet to see one overturned on appeal.

There is a special look on a soldier’s face when you show him the stupid picture he posted, and read him his rights. Last one I was involved with cost the soldier two ranks and half-month’s pay for two months.

No one said you can’t criticize her. I’m aware members of the armed services do all kinds of things wrong including murder. But she IS in the volunteer service and I have no need to call her a pig and all these other angry rants on here. The photo doesn’t amount to much and gee is this the first member of our armed forces to act rowdy?

Just saying.

Yeah, it is a over reaction.

If you read the article, she posted on facebook (before it was taken down) that the pic was three years old and she was young, dumb, and stupid and made a mistake that she hopes she will not be paying for, for the rest of her life..

I think we can accept that as the truth...

“Everyone does it so it’s OK.”

Have you morals? Character? Ideals?

Or is everything relative?

Just curious.

Article 15 or Court Martial? Because if you are taking pay I think that’s CM: but then again, I mustered out in ‘93 so what do I know.

You can take pay in an Article 15.
Higher penalties, of course, in Field-Grade Article 15s, which is where our internet poster wound up
