McDonald’s worker fired after paying for food donation (to local firefighters)
WIVB.com ^ | February 18, 2014 | Lou Raguse

Heather Levia wanted to help first responders by giving them a warm meal on a cold day, but when she showed up to work the next morning she no longer had a job.

(snip)

When word spread that Levia paid the bill, some firefighters called her boss and complained, thinking the restaurant made Levia feel obligated to pay for their meals.

Levia says after that, her boss told her, “You opened a whole bee’s nest.”

My guess is that there's more going on between this woman and her boss than is being reported, but regardless, the boss acted stupidly. Expect Mickey-D's to backtrack quickly.

Actually, to my mind (and one that has had the opportunity to work for them between ages 14 and 17), giving the first-responders a free meal there wasn’t actually all that laudable and act.

In my opinion, most of their food is little more than the cardboard they wrap it in except for color and consistency and being warm (sometimes).

She’ll get a better job with better pay somewhere else. Not to worry!

Why did those firefighters allow this minimum wager to pay for their meals???

They should have thanked her for the gesture and paid for their own meals themselves as they make a lot more money than she does anyway.

One of the best bosses I ever had was my manager when I worked at McD’s, and one of the worst bosses I ever had was my manager when I worked at McD’s.

You find good and bad everywhere, in my experience.

if all the appropriate facts are as reported

both some of the firefighters and the boss acted stupidly and rashly

it seems some of the firefighters and the boss did not wait to find out what all the facts were

the boss could have found out that the wrong assumption some of the firefighers had about why the lady paid the bill came from the firefighters themselves, not the McDonalds employee

had he done that first, he would have admitted that the worker did not bring the heat on him; some of the firefighters did that and for it his worker deserved an apoligy from the firefighters not a firing from him

agreed, the sums are not representative of a good practice such an employee should be in the habit of making

however, correcting that only requires a reprimand for their misplaced good intentions, not loss of their job

I was thinking the same thing. Unless things are different where these folks live, most public safety workers have lavish salaries, pensions and other benefits. Absolutely insane how many low-earning private sector folks seem to view cops and firefighters as in need of their charity.

Yeah? I totally see why.

She went over her boss’s head and called the corporate office to try to get his decision overturned to give out a free meal. Doesnt matter whom it was going to and why, she seems to have a bit of a big head on her. When her told her no, she was not asked what her opinion of the decision was.

Read the last two paragraphs of the article. The franchisee does a great job of slimy PR.

What you said is true. My first job out of college was as a manager trainee in retail. I put up with a lot more jerks in management than at the worker level.

One one of my last days after I had located my next position and given them notice, I was bossing people around and acting like a general pr*ck because I had nothing to lose and just felt like it.

One of the managers told me "I didn't know you had it in you to be such an a**hole. You should have stayed in this profession, you're so good at it."
