Heather Levia wanted to help first responders by giving them a warm meal on a cold day, but when she showed up to work the next morning she no longer had a job.
(snip)
When word spread that Levia paid the bill, some firefighters called her boss and complained, thinking the restaurant made Levia feel obligated to pay for their meals.
Levia says after that, her boss told her, You opened a whole bees nest.

After she asked her boss, and he said no, then she could have just taken up a collection from staff to buy a gift certificate to them and mail it with a note of thanks if she felt such a need to do this.
He got that right. He'd better prepare for Hell on Earth....
I’m not quite tracking the story - why exactly did some firefighters complain?
I was thinking the same thing. Unless things are different where these folks live, most public safety workers have lavish salaries, pensions and other benefits. Absolutely insane how many low-earning private sector folks seem to view cops and firefighters as in need of their charity.

WIVB is a Buffalo station, and I quickly googled firefighter pay in Buffalo - less than 60K a year on average.
Does that sound lavish to you?
And perhaps it’s not charity being given, but appreciation for the job they do?
Absolutely insane how many people find fault with a kind gesture.
I resembled that! Many years ago we gave police officers free coffee, the Police Dept. asked us to stop because they felt it looked inappropriate. I think it's good business to have police around, keeps the riff raff away.
A McDonald’s employee paid for a meal for members of the rich, socialist political class? Maybe she’ll learn from that mistake. If not, she’ll learn, when she has to pay an “impact fee” (extortion) to local firegangsters before being allowed to live on her own property.
Why do people feel that police and fire deserve a free ride? They are paid, often generously, with our tax dollars and have good pensions. Their contribution to society is not any greater than anyone elses. Try living without the garbage collector or the sewage workers. They are significantly more important than police and fire. Were we up to our butts in garbage and sewage, fore and police protection wouldn’t matter so much. Where would we be without the grocer and farmer? The list goes on.
I had a friend who was a cop in Spanish Harlem; armpit of the universe. He refused even a free newspaper or soda. He insisted that it starts small. Soon it is meals, then larger items, then you might be inclined to look the other way for a price. He is correct. Furthermore, he noted, it gives you a sense of entitlement and you grow to expect more and more preferential treatment.
She was silly to do what she did. She was silly to believe that McD’s should feed public servants for free. McD’s was silly to fire her. I guess the whole thing was silly.

She was apparently already looking for another job.
Not guilty.
Yep —
She just wanted to suck up to the fire department at McD’s
expense and when told NO she went over her boss’s head and NO again she leaned on other employees there to do it anyway at their expense.
I think she’s too stupid or too stubborn or too incorrigible for even McDees.
They were right to fire her.
I can’t be sure but this is a carbon copy if not the girl who lived across the street from me for a few years. Right age, looks just like her.
Who knows how many name changes she has acquired over the past 10 years but 2 kids, not married fits the profile. If it is her, she was “special” as a young teen. Smart Ass, know it all, gonna fix the world and wanted someone else to pay for it. If it is her, Iam suprised she actually held a job for that long.
Lemme put it this way, In 10 years she could be the next Abortion Barbie.
I’d offer her a job!
They saw that she paid for it out of her own pocket, and thought she had been pressured by the restaurant to do that. Really, the firefighters may have messed up on this one.
She can’t be too hard off then if she can afford to pay for their meals.
I CAN’T EVEN BUY MY OWN DAM MCD’S.
Let’s have a pity party for her now.
In the article, it says that the firefighters thought that it was the company providing the food.
In the article, it says that they only learned that SHE paid for it later.
In the article, it says that they called up the boss and complained to him, because they thought the boss had made her pay for it.
Does that clear it up?
But she should not have expected her employer to pick up the tab for her continued generosity.
Because she wanted to use ANOTHER persons money for her feel-good antics, this McDonalds got bad press for it.
I don’t know about all of that, but she did a pretty good job of schmoozing the press.
I live in S.E. Michigan and play senior softball with a retired Warren firefighter whose retirement pay is $90K per year.........
That's all I'm going to say about that............
It will be interesting later if the boss is in the hospital and the young lady is his nurse.
