What's missing from this list of people Mika Brzezinski blasted on today's Morning Joe for "making a lot of money at the Olympics" while Vladimir Putin's suppression of democracy in the Ukraine unfolds: "the people performing there, the people competing there, the people sponsoring there"?

Did you say NBC, Mika's own parent network? You get a gold medal! To whom does Mika think "the people sponsoring there" are paying their millions to promote their products? Has Mika not noticed that regular programming on MSNBC itself has been pre-empted by the Putin Olympics?

My comment was meant tongue in cheek..but I do recall several times in the past where either NBC or ABC lost big on several Olympics..they attempted to explain it away as a loss-leader..saying it allowed them to promote their upcoming shows..

You’re right: the Olympics might be a loss leader for NBC, something to build their profile and prestige. Even so, NBC is certainly taking in millions in ad revenue from the Olympics, and if they were to end their coverage it would certainly send a statement, and cost them lots of money.

I think I read somewheres that NBC was hoping to make $100 mill net on the Olympics..the problem is that they’re broadcasting every event live..on one platform or another..so everything in prime time is taped, and after everyone knows the results..which today is instantaneous..so they aren’t getting the audiences...and the ad revenues they need. Look at women’s hockey, and women’s ice skating...the premier events...they were on yesterday morning..
