Dalai Lama gets ice from Obama, warmth from conservatives [O opposes independence from China]
Daily Caller ^ | February 22, 2014 | Neil Munro

Posted on 02/23/2014 6:17:50 PM PST by grundle

The Dalai Lama got a frosty closed-door reception from President Barack Obama Feb. 21, one day after he got a public bear-hug from the conservative American Enterprise Institute.

The world’s most famous Buddhist returned the conservatives’ respect by offering a compliment for the AEI’s civic-minded capitalism.

“After to listen [sic] yesterday and to the presenters today, I developed more respect about capitalism,” the Dalai Lama told AEI president Arthur Brooks Feb. 20 during a friendly panel discussion on “happiness, free enterprise, and human flourishing.”

The president forced the Dalai Lama to pay a price for the United States’ tepid and cautious support for the Tibetans’ culture.

That price was the Dalai Lama’s public agreement that the U.S. isn’t going to support Tibetan political independence from China.

The President reiterated the U.S. position that Tibet is part of the People’s Republic of China and that the United States does not support Tibet independence,” said the statement.“The Dalai Lama stated that he is not seeking independence for Tibet and hopes that dialogue between his representatives and the Chinese government will resume.”

It seems so in other forums as well. Liberals posing as conservatives that show up around election times then disappear afterwards for long periods of time.

The Chinese aren't STUPID. THEY know what a fruitless, futile task that would be. The Tibetans are WAY, way, way . . .

No, the Chinese aren't stupid. They're desperately evil. The Dalai Lama doesn't spend much time in Tibet because he's in exile. The Chinese want to kill him. He's publicly pro-life, for one thing. In Communist China, that's pretty much a capital offense, as it were. And he's pro-chastity and says homosexuality is wrong. That's why there aren't too many Lefties with "Free Tibet" on the bumper anymore.

Back off the Lama. The problem's 0bama.

“The Dalai Lama is a personal friend of my son, the documentary film maker. Son went to Tibet, made it up those high mountains and has stayed with the Dalai Lama there and they have met twice since then (I don't remember if another one of those times was again in Tibet) and are friends. Dalai Lama is a gentle, sweet man wanting humankind to be kind. There is not an angry word in his vocabulary. It was terrible when China came in as they have no respect for this gentle man.

I'm trying to remember, but I think in that first film, the child to be the next Lama had been chosen and was in that film. I could be wrong about that as the first film was a while ago. Sometimes I get to see the films son does, but some I do not see. I have a movie CD player that has the British system on it so I can see these films. The British system is different from ours and if you don't have that system you cannot see films from there. When a
British one is put in my player, it senses the system and uses the British system to show it.

It's also possible the Dalai Lama film was shown in this country on Discovery or History or National Geographic channel. I feel sure some of you have seen his films on those channels but you didn't know a Texan made those films in another country. He has also made films in this country for National Geographic and Discovery.

Anyway, the Dalai Lama has a Texan for a buddy.

I have met H.H. Dalai twice and I can tell you he is a very nice man . Unpretentious utterly . Very funny in a very pure innocent sort of way . If you never see him in person its hard to imagine what he is really like . Kind of like a big happy innocent kid....

Well I have had a lot of cats, but none quite that catty.

What are they, Buddhist? Most Buddhists have no problem with modernization.

So many people were HORRIFIED when the Chinese forced themselves into Tibet...and I am NO fan of the Commie Chinese but EVEN THEY are better for the Tibetans than their own worthless, useless leadership and government.

You are indeed a fan of the "Commie Chinese" and the holocaust they have perpetrated in Tibet.

YOU are horrifying.

Obama obviously considers China to be more important than the Dalai Lama. Also, Moslems and Buddhists have not gotten along well lately. Remember how the Taliban blew up the world’s largest Buddhas in Afghanistan, and how the militant Buddhist government of Myanmar is driving out that country’s Moslem minority (the Rohingyas).

1. Well I have had a lot of cats, but none quite that catty.
2. What are they, Buddhist? Most Buddhists have no problem with modernization.

1. Cats are pretty nice, aren't they?

2. Buddhists are atheists. So they would have no problem with modernization. It has NOTHING to do with their faith. They have no God/god. Buddha was a man, Sithartha Gautama, an Indian. He told the people INNUMERABLE times that he was not a god or God. They INSISTED on deifying him. The Buddhists don't worship him; they only venerate him.

Oddly enough Buddhism DID not "catch on" in India, as they had their own pantheon of gods/goddesses for eons. But, as it spread east, it caught on amazingly.
I am SURE some people MIGHT worship him as a god but that isn't my understanding. His "right ways" are good things for all people to follow.

He's not GOD, our Father, Son and Holy Spirit, however, but a GOOD man from all information. There was NO writing then so all we know about him is from an oral tradition. I never thought much of oral traditions. Jesus was born into a totally literate society. There must be a reason for that.

Yes his is a gentle, sweet man, all good about him. The Tibetans deserve him; there's not much else good in their lives.

2. I'm trying to remember, but I think in that first film, the child to be the next Lama had been chosen and was in that film. I could be wrong about that as the first film was a while ago. Yes, they have the NEXT dalai lama picked WAY ahead of time. The boys come from the common folks but I can't remember why. I think that's a good thing.

I saw it quite a while ago. I taught yoga for over 25 years. I didn't practice the ancient yoga as it is TOTALLY inappropriate for the West, but I did tell my students about their history.
I had NO idea that the film maker had been a Texan, but why not? Cameramen come from all places.

4. Anyway, the Dalai Lama has a Texan for a buddy.
He couldn't do ANY better. One of my oldest friends lives in Texas, way out in Robertson County...out in the middle of NOWHERE. They DO have fire ants. One bit me a LONG time ago and the scar lasted a FULL YEAR. Hard to forget "deep in the heart of Texas."

Back off the Lama. The problem's 0bama.

The "problem" isn't only Obama's. That kind of DESPERATE poverty is EVERY Christian's problem.

The Dalai Lama is a good man. Tibetans need ANYTHING good in their lives. They live in one of the worst misery-countries ever to exist. I feel very sorry for them. I have been to China but not Tibet. The Chinese had closed off Tibet from the world.
NOTHING will help the Tibetans for a long time. Their culture is so very primitive. I felt the sorriest for their women.

From the Internet:
Polygamy refers to the practice of having more than one spouse. It is broader than polygyny, which refers to situations where one man has multiple wives, and polyandry, which refers to one woman with multiple husbands
Polyandry is a form of polygamy whereby a woman has several husbands. In Tibet those husbands are often brothers, which is why it is most commonly called "Fraternal Polyandry". Concern over the delicate question of which children are fathered by which brother falls on the wife alone. She may or may not say who the father is because she does not wish to create conflict in the family; she may also be unsure who the biological father is.
Historically, the social system compelled marriage within a social class.

Initially, when the People's Republic of China annexed Tibet, political systems in many regions of Tibet remained unchanged.
Then starting between 1959 and 1960 political reforms changed the land ownership and taxation systems.
Professor Melvyn Goldstein believed this had a direct impact on Tibet's traditional marriage system. With the change of the social stratification as a result of land ownership and taxation systems, the du-jung and the mi-bo lower classes were the first to avoid the intramarriages that characterized the older society.

However, as part of its population control measures, the Chinese government later forbade polygamous marriage altogether under family law. Even though it is currently illegal, after collective farming was phased out and the farmed land reverted in the form of long-term leases to individual families, polygamy, polyandry an polygyny in Tibet are the de facto the norm in rural areas.Polygyny (from neo-Greek πολυγυνία from πολύ poly "many", and γυνή gyne "woman or wife")[1] is a form of plural marriage in which a man is allowed more than one wife (i.e. it is a narrow form of polygamy, and distinguished from other forms of polygamy such as polyandry).[2] In modern countries that permit polygamy, polygyny is typically the only form permitted.
So, a Tibetan woman has to take care of, cater to and bed MANY men in her life, as she has many husbands. Maybe some folks think that's a good thing, but it REALLY isn't. How can it be? She doesn't get husbands who will wait on HER. NO, she just has more men to take care of, feed, bed and be slaves to. NOT a nice way to live.
Some younger people may snicker at her having many husbands as a cute and funny thing, but it's disastrous for Tibetan women. They live neither long nor well, even in the world of third world sewers.

MY POINT WAS: I wish that the Dalai Lama would try to change some of the wretchedness of HIS OWN PEOPLE. He does have to cater to the "bigger stick" (China) but I think he might work for some CHANGES, at least for Tibetan women.
He continually works for the preservation of the Tibetan culture. Gee, isn't THAT wonderful for the Tibetan women? No one ever challenges him on that in all the years I've seen and heard him. I WISH he would come out against preserving the wretchedness of his own FEMALE people.
How can he BEAR to witness such wretchedness and poverty in HIS OWN PEOPLE? How can he BEAR to be a part of a Tibetan future BEREFT of any progress for Tibetan women?

Polygamy refers to the practice of having more than one spouse. It is broader than polygyny, which refers to situations where one man has multiple wives, and polyandry, which refers to one woman with multiple husbands.
