Ping - you may find this of interest!
I wonder if it has anything new in it concerning the U.S.S Indianapolis?
Inquiring minds want to know
could be interesting
Man, talk about juicy excerpt material . . .
Yep. Gonna be interesting to see what his thoughts were on McArthur, FDR! Etc...
Nimitz was known for his colorful descriptions of our enemies in the Pacific. That would be considered non PC in the world after the victories our Navy/Marines and US Army had in the Pacific.
Yep, those bulkheads can’t talk but the diary can
Actually, not Nimitz. He never resorted to that. It was Bill Halsey who was known for his borderline racist descriptions, to the point that even in that day, it gave some people pause.
Nimitz was much more measured and low key about such things. While he harbored a huge amount of anger about the Japanese treatment of allied POWs, he recognized that a bridge had to be built to move forward.
He actually was fairly involved in the effort to save and restore the Mikasa, Admiral Togo’s flagship in the Battle for Tsushima Straits against the Russians.
I am interested in hearing what Nimitz thought of the San Bernadino Straits and Typhoon Cobra events.
Heh, I am virtually certain Nimitz viewed MacArthur in much the same way Eisenhower viewed DeGaulle.
They was?...................
I loved the story about how MacArthur was angling for his own fleet to command and territory to conquer, and was particularly insistent about being in charge of Watchtower (I think) in the Solomons. This would have resulted in a very strange chain of command, and no way did King, Lahey and Nimitz want to give that to MacArthur, especially not a fleet.
Their solution? Simply move the line that divides the responsibility between Army and Navy command 90 miles to the west...problem solved!
He was steaming mad about that! I can imagine King, Leahy and Nimitz having a chuckle at MacArthur’s expense on that.
I am no fan of MacArthur, though I readily admit he had some remarkable qualities as a general.
The original one is back .. asked mods to nuke the one I started after this one disappeared.
MacArthur was a SOB but he was our SOB...
Based on the description in the article it's the war diary kept by his staff, and not Nimitz's personal diary with his private thoughts.
At the court martial of the Indianapolis's skipper, the Jap submarine CO testified something to the affect, "I was on the surface at night and along came this enemy cruiser with most of its lights on. I torpedoed and sank it. That was my job."
What more do you need to know?
Thanks you are correct: “Actually, not Nimitz. He never resorted to that. It was Bill Halsey who was known for his borderline racist descriptions, to the point that even in that day, it gave some people pause.”
