So far in 2014, initial unemployment claims have been largely stuck, though we were supposed to see some progress this morning. According to the new figures from the Labor Department, we didn’t:
The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits jumped by 14,000 to 348,000 last week to match a five-week high, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to total 335,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The average of new claims over the past month, a more reliable gauge than the volatile weekly number, was unchanged at 338,250.

‘so far in 2014’?? there’s only been one month of stats... and those had to be ‘revised’ ... unexpectedly ... just like every such stat over the last 5 years

Around here, some established restaurances and small business have shut down. How can anyone be surprised that this winter that has changed people’s spending patterns would cause people to lose jobs?
Expectedly, we find the left using the word “unexpectedly” again....

The media response to all of this reminds me an old joke in which people on an airplane are sequentially told by the pilot ‘we’ve lost engine number one, but we have three other engines - so no problem. Our flight will just take about 30 minutes longer.’ This goes on for the sequential losses of engines 2 and 3. After the third engine fails a passenger comments “If we lose that last engine we’ll be up here all day”.
That’s about as logical as the manner in which the media has reacted to the progressively shrinking percentage of people employed in the US.

Yeah, but they’re all free now to have more leisure time, be with the kids, do some art painting, basket weaving, whatever. Obama planned it that way.
Now with Obamacare, and SSI, SSDI, SNAP, TANF, EITC, WICS, Section 8, ObamaPhones, they don’t need no job.
