WHITE PLAINS — After nearly 20 months of buildup, the misdemeanor trial of Kerry Kennedy ended on Friday in a breakneck blur, as jurors took one hour to find her not guilty of driving under the influence of a drug.
The five-day trial, which featured a riveting turn on the witness stand by Ms. Kennedy, 54, was centered on an act that neither she nor prosecutors dispute: On July 13, 2012, she drove her Lexus S.U.V. erratically after swallowing Zolpidem, a generic form of the sleep medication Ambien. She sideswiped a tractor-trailer on a highway in Westchester County before she was found, slumped over her steering wheel, her car stalled on a local road.
Ms. Kennedy has maintained that she took the pill accidentally, mistaking it for medication she took for a thyroid condition. She testified on Wednesday that she did not realize her mistake until well after the accident.
When the verdict was announced, some of her friends and family members seated behind her, which included her 85-year-old mother, Ethel Kennedy, cheered and clapped. Ms. Kennedy hugged one of her lawyers, William I. Aronwald, and patted the back of the other, Gerald B. Lefcourt. And as people filed out of the courtroom, Ms. Kennedy said she bore no ill will to the prosecutors who brought the case.
“To tell you the truth, anger is the last feeling I have right now,” she said. “I’m full of gratitude.”
The issue at trial was whether Ms. Kennedy, the former wife of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and a daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, should have been aware that she was feeling the drug’s soporific effects, as she was swerving and driving erratically, and stopped the car.

Nasty, nasty stuff! I was gaining weight, cuz I’d sleepwalk into the kitchen and eat a loaf of bread! One night I threw some chicken in a dry frying pan, turned on the stove, and went to watch the tv that wasn’t on. I woke up when the smoke got down to the floor where I was reclining and watching the tv. Wonder what show my brain was replaying? Didn’t remember a thing!
Why even waste the money on a trial for a Kennedy? There is no jury in NY or MA going to convict them of anything.
Thoughts: She didn’t want a guilty plea so she decided to have trial. No doubt she would get off but it cost some bucks...to them so what. Happened at 8 something in the morning and she was heading in an odd direction relative to her home. You definitely don’t keep sleeping pills close to normal daily medications.
I think all drugs are cr@p drugs, as you so eloquently put it. I could be legitimately arrested for drunk driving if I took ANY prescription pain killer, antidepressant, or even blood pressure meds.
Getting doctors to believe you is really difficult. I have to fight for my life with all of them, even dentists who can knock me out for DAYS with anesthetics. One-third the regular dose does it for me.
My former doc finally had an epiphany: “You’re a HIGH RESPONDER to drugs.” That’s the medical term, which you might find useful when arguing with pill pushers.
Kennedy, nuff said. North East royalty. Rape, murder, drugs and drunk driving.....Not a problem if your a Kennedy.

We had a lot of problems when my dad was on Xanax for anxiety. It messed with his sleep, so he'd be awake at 3am making phone calls to neighbors. Once he called the police saying someone was trying to hurt him. Fortunately they believed my mother when she explained about dad and his meds. They probably see this a lot. Old people don't metabolize these things as well as the young, and some of these drugs make people really loopy.
I’m sure in a parallel universe there is a good Kennedy, but just not in this one.

The “Great Kennedy Curse” is that they are immune to most human made laws, causing them to believe they are equally immune to the laws of physics, chemistry, avionics, meteorology, etc. Hence, the maker of those laws, not having been informed of the general Kennedy immunity, periodically kills one or more of them.
Of course she was acquitted!
She comes from a famous family, doncha know? Any one else would be doing hard time.

Cost me a lot of money and work! Pan was trashed. As was all the wall to wall carpeting, all the wallpaper, and the paint was covered with brown smoke residue which had to be scrubbed off before repainting.
Her gratitude should be focused on that fact that she didn’t kill anyone unfortunate enough to be on those roads at the same time she was driving erratically while under the influence of a drug she took “accidentally.”
Yeah, what a surprise.
Up here in the New York State Capital District, that be Albany NY for you in Rio Linda, a lady can run over and kill THREE, not ONE, not TWO, but THREE senior aged women standing on the grass outside a church and get off with time served, plus odds and ends.....don’t know how much “time” was served from newspaper reports.
