Ukrainian armed forces dispatched to Crimea have switched to the side of local authorities and are expected to take military oath soon, Russian news agencies report.
Facts you need to know about Crimea and why it is in turmoil
Today the majority of the Ukrainian armed forces deployed in Crimea passed to the side of the authorities of the Crimean autonomous region. The transition was absolutely peaceful, without a single shot fired either by the military or by the forces of self-defense, an unnamed source told RIA Novosti news agency.
The source added that some of the servicemen also ran away, while some submitted letters of resignation.
The local military have not been paid for many months, the source also told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, Ukrainian troops in Crimea were said to be resigning on a massive scale. Living quarters, weapons and ammunition have all been left under the protection of the so-called self-defense forces.
Letters of resignation have been coming in since early morning, as the self-defense forces continue to preserve order on the streets of Simferopol, RIA Novosti said citing own reporters on the ground.
Since Thursday, the citys Supreme Council and a number of other buildings have been occupied and guarded by the self-defense forces run by the local population.
Crimeas deputy prime minister, Rustam Temirgaliev, announced that the Ukrainian armed forces have all but surrendered their military capabilities and that no active units remain in the Crimea.
"The entire Ukrainian armed forces stationed on the Crimean territory have been blocked," Interfax reported him as saying. "The self-defense forces have taken control of the landing strips of all the Crimean airports and airfields."
The deputy PM said that that the regions security services and emergency services now report to the local government.
Crimeans began protesting after the new self-imposed government in Kiev introduced a law abolishing the use of other languages for official documents in Ukraine. More than half the Crimean population are Russian and use only this language for their communication. The residents have announced they are going to hold a referendum on March 30 to determine the fate of the Ukrainian autonomous region.
Don’t watch RT. Is is pure Russian propaganda. Yeah, I know that the other side has propaganda too.
Question the source...
That’s not exactly a surprise. What would be a surprise is if the Tatars knuckle under. The Crimea was easy pickings for Putin. We’re no where near the end game though.
Russian propaganda in high gear. Which side are you on?
What ever side George Soros, John McCain, Bathhouse Barry, Susan Rice, and the sodomite EU is on I am on the opposite side by default.
The average Serb would, by default, side with Russia. No real surprise here. Whereas the average Croat or Slovene might side with the US.
If our economy collapsed, and China landed their entire force in California, with planes and helicopters patrolling over major cities in the western half of the country, what do you think would happen?
Obama will offer those who flee the Ukrainian Army unemployment benefits so they stay on the right side which is what ever Obama says....just ask Morsi how it works.
How awful. Ukrainians want their official documents written in Ukrainian? Unfreakinbelievable! what are they thinking?!!
Coming soon to an America near you when all laws and school textbooks will be in spanish.
Which replaces their earlier oath.
Haha it’s funny but troublesome that John McCain it listed here with a bunch of hardcore lefties. Sad but true.
False propaganda. Some Ukranian forces have been holding out in the Crimea as long as possible to avoid capitulating before it becomes necessary to do so.
John McCain is hardcore left
The Ukraine had a huge army. They saved some bucks and pretty much got rid of it. Now they want US to defend them?? After they provoke a coup?? Go to hell.
I think there would be a lot of shooting.
There were many Russian speakers living in Ukraine - where, furthermore, Russian had been the official language for some time - and attacking them immediately lost their loyalty. It was a stupid, typically nationalist gesture that then gave Russia the chance to say that they were protecting the rights of Russians.
Odungo sure is working hard to make sure that very thing happens.
I wonder what you might say if the U.S. government went after people speaking Spanish.
This is a list of the supposed bills.
One of the promises Yanukovitch campaigned on in 2010 was the idea of allowing regional discretion in the official languages used, which was something the Tartars and other regional minorities wanted. In comparison one of the first things the puppet government in Kiev did after seizing Parliament was pass a law making Ukrainian the only official language.
Stop posting Russian propaganda without labelling it as much. Russia Today and Voice of Russia, along with Pravda, were founded by the Russian Government, funded by the Russian Government, and says exactly what the Russian Government wants you to hear.
Our street signs are now in Spanish in one area. The English signs have been removed. Upstate NY!! That’s going after Americans!!
I’m so glad our media is not like them.
Funny thing right now is that the Ukrainians are really mad at McCain and Kerry. Its hilarious. Theyre saying,
Who are these McCain and Kerry and why are they getting involved in Ukraine? Do they want to move here?
Not a shot fired in Crimea and no “enemy” left. Cool.
Mr. Soros, is that you?
Brawl breaks out in Ukrainian parliament in pictures
So, if you are ok with Russian propaganda, you are ok with MSM propaganda in the US? Just curious.
Hope you have some hip boots, the propaganda is
You can tell Obama is a messiah, he’s able to
walk on propaganda with out sinking in the sh*t.
I’d be horrified. Why should the government go after people speaking Spanish?
Also, the US already did this. When New Mexico and Arizona became states, a concentrated effort was made to wipe out the speaking of Spanish. In fact, it took them decades to move from territories to states because US legislators regarded them as “too Spanish” and “too Catholic.” The extermination attempt didn’t work, of course, because there were Spanish speaking settlers in those states for some 200 years before the existence of the US, but the US certainly tried to do it.
But in general, you don’t understand what I’m saying. Ukraine has always had a fair number of Russian speakers, and as it transitioned to an independent country, many of them stayed. This is not a bad thing. But with typical nationalist over-kill, the Kiev nationalists attacked them, thus giving Russia the excuse it needed. It is claiming that its intervention is to protect Russians.
Russia Today is a source of information more trustworthy than CNN and NBC. I often counter-checked their news and RT won always, hands down.
Get over it. The Soviet Union ceased to exist 23 years ago, one whole generation.
Pravda with a new name.
Make sure you check under your bed for Mr. Soros tonight, like you do every other night.
the lamestream media would air feel-good stories about the underserved citizenry who benefitted from it
They want their country back from the Russian occupiers. Some of those bills are little bit ill-advised and over zealous. I understand why they want some of those done now, but I think it would be wiser to seek unity and avoid some of the more divisive items.
It’s funny, but all of the college kids “lambs” who were Soros’ Maidan stooges are freaking out because their revolutionary leaders who were on the streets are now wearing $2,000 suits and riding around in black Mercedes acting just like the same people they ousted. Now their only allies are the Bandera Nazis. Now they’re walking around confused in Kiev not knowing what to do. Too funny.
RT = Russian Talkingpoints
So you’re a commie sympathizer.
They are a state run propaganda agency that is totally funded and staffed by Russian sycophants. I don’t know how they stack up to MSM propaganda, but in my view they are both equally dishonest and untrustworthy.
If you think that Russia would spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a news agency that is fair and balanced, and is honest on reporting even on Russia, then you really need to open your eyes.
“RT network now consists of three global news channels broadcasting in English, Spanish and Arabic, RT America broadcasting from a Washington, DC studio and a documentary channel RTDoc. RT has 22 bureaus in 19 countries and territories, with a presence in Washington, New York, London, Berlin, Gaza, Cairo, Baghdad and other key cities and employs over 1000 media professionals around the globe.
RT is the winner of the 2013 Monte Carlo TV Festival Award for the best 24-hour newscast, for reporting on the Chelyabinsk meteor crash. In 2010, RT became the first Russian TV channel to be nominated for the prestigious International Emmy award in the News category. The network received its second News nomination, in 2012, for its coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement.”
I am on the Russian side.
Well, THIS did happen
Several of the Russian government sites are accurate and objective to that degree, and have the additional advantage that they are adware, spyware, and controlware free.
Would they occupy Chinatown?
I guess we should stop posting any news from any source. It’s all propaganda.
I think most of us are smart enough to be able to read something and decide for ourselves what to believe and what not to believe.
In the end we’ll find out the truth.
