BENNINGTON, Vt. — Stephanie Predel, a stick-thin 23-year-old freshly out of jail, said she was off heroin. But she knows precisely where she could get more drugs if she ever wanted them — at the support meetings for addicts. “I can get most of my drugs right at the meeting,” she said. “Drug dealers go because they know they’re going to get business.” She added, “People are going into the bathroom to get high.” Bennington, a pre-Revolutionary town of 17,000 people, presents another face of the heroin epidemic that has swept through Vermont. In January, Gov. Peter Shumlin devoted his entire State of the State address to what he said was a “full-blown heroin crisis” gripping the state. In an interview later, he said that the state’s localities had managed only a patchwork response. Citing Rutland’s antidrug crusade as a hopeful sign, he said that not all areas had felt the same urgency. “Bennington is where Rutland was four years ago,” he said.

The seventies have a small town scourge of heroin in Northern New England. About 72 to 76. The locals I was familiar with went after the pushers. Hard.

Yes, Afghanistan. Every heroin OD death is another casualty of our involvement there. Not every soldier we send over there is a choirboy.
I live in a comfortable suburban community north of Indy; we are getting hammered with heroin abuse among our kids. Thirty years ago heroin was pretty much just a “black thing” down in the ‘hood. Not any more.
Our local dope cops aren’t doing dick about the problem. They’d rather kick down the doors of some recent college grads to find a little weed in their apartment. They haven’t done a heroin dealer bust in two years. They’re pretty much worthless.
There has been in big cities like New York since before the 80's. Otherwise you are correct that it wasn't available in smaller towns and cities.
Morphine is a prescription pain killer derived from the same poppy plant that produces heroin. You mean we have a shortage of that and/or it doesn't work?
I don't know why anyone would willingly want to do heroin unless they want to make money from it. It is totally stupid, make that almost suicidal, to play with highly addictive drugs.
I've known heroin addicts, more than I would have thought in my lifetime. They say cigarettes are worse for addiction. I don't believe it. I quit 2+ packs a day cold turkey about 3 years ago now, with God's help. Heroin can kill you if you try to quit cold turkey and I think it would be more addictive even though I've never tried any street drugs.

What exactly are you talking about?
A tragedy. And it is one of the BIG differences between NA and AA. The number of connections one can make at an NA meeting is astonishing. There also seems to be a brain chemistry kick in, a contact high, that druggies get from hearing stories of using.
I feel sorry for any community over run by the addicted. All one has to b=do is look at Zurich and Needle Park at the end of 80s and into the 90s to see what will be the long term result.
That gangs deliberately infiltrate the armed forces and the soldiers use their position to assist in the shipment of heroin back to the United States. Do all them do this? No. Do the majority do this? No. But if you believe none of them do, you are being quite naive.
